What engine options are there? Also brake options
I am new to this forum and I am considering purchasing a 1977 porsche 911. Problem is that the motor and the transmission are gone. So what options do I have for the motor and transmission? Whats a 911 worth without the motor and transmission if it has had the strosek conversion done to it with bigger wheels and tires? It also doesnt have the stock seats. Seems to be a pretty clean car. I was thinking about doing a 350 conversion or a ls1 conversion but by the time you price out everything it seems that sticking porsche is the way to go. Any help or input is greatly appreciated.
The axle halfshafts are there too. What other things do I need to look at when purchasing a porsche 911? Has 275x40x17 in the rear and 245x40x17 in the front pretty clean car. If you can give me a estimate on costs and options it would be great. Also why has no one adapted corvette brake calipers on a porsche? It seems like they would be a good fit if you could find a rotor that fit. What brake options do i have. Sorry for all the questions I am new to the market but excited to become a enthusiast. |

How much for this car without engine and transmission, and what's the condition of the body? There's a story here...

I was wondering what it is worth without a trans or motor. Heres the story the owner bought the porsche drove it for about 6 months spun a bearing took it into his local porsche shop they convinced him to upgrade. So he sold it to them for a grand then he had to move now the car is for sale. So what is it worth? It needs motor, transmission, the wheels and tires are in good shape, interior is great, has factory sunroof. So whats a fair price to pay for the car. It also needs rear tailights. 964 conversion.
Brakes look good, no rust, fairly decent paint job. The right rear quarter has a ever so small crack on one of the edges but other than that it looks great. Matt. |

Well Matt, what's your budget? cheap=$8k, 3.6, g50 conversion=$10-20k depending on upgrades/missing parts/labor
spun a bearing? where is the engine at? can you find it?

I can pick it up for 3,000 grand is that worth it or I can buy a 72 ish 911 that has already been converted to a 350 with the renegage kit for 4500.00 The strosek car seems alot nicer though. The 72 has fuchs while the other has custom rims. Both cars have little rust. What are some areas to watch out for other than rust?
Thanks Matt |

I've seen a 2.3 non-turbo in a 911 - I have a picture somewhere. I have no idea why someone would do that. Engine swaps are fairly rare in the porsche community and non porsche power plants are typically shunned. Same rules apply as with any swap though; just make it fit. It's just that you don't really have a porsche when you are done.

A ford 2.3 with a holset he351 is capable of 350-400hp with just bigger injectors and all stock motor. stock exhaust manifold etc. That is ultimately what i want or a ls6 swap.

see post #5 these cars are great and mostly maintenance free but if you want to start from scratch, I would pass on this one and find one with low miles (100,000 miles +-) and start there. Lot easier fixen whats broke when it breaks than finding parts to make it work in the first place. If you buy a P car that's running, at least you have a starting point. but a shell....that's a huge project.

Needs a drivetrain............
You should be able to find a decent 3.0 liter engine and a 915 gearbox for maybe $6 -$8,000 which should be a bolt in combo. If you want to hot rod it a little, ditch the CIS, add PMO carbs and 964 cams for another $4 grand or so. If you are really determined to do an engine swap, look at some of the Subaru tubo engines that are around. They are the same H configuration as the Porsche engine and with turbos make decent horsepower. No matter which way you go, you will have quite a few dollars invested!
Good luck with your project!

If the brakes are stock for a 77 then consider that they were 'just adequate' for the 165 hp engine it came with. If you put some monster 400 hp job in there, plus the added weight of that motor and water cooling, you better be prepared to do a complete brake overhaul to the tune of about 2500 on the cheap side and up from there.
At the end of the day you have 3x as much in the car as it will ever be worth. The 75-77 cars aren't that desirable (no offense to the middie crowd), plus you have a Strosek kit (another minus) and then a converted water cooled V8. Your resale market is pretty slim to none (and Slim just left town ![]() On the other hand, if you put in a 2.7, 3.0, 3.2,3.4, 3.6 air cooled motor or build up one of the aforementioned, then you stay Porsche and have a potentially decent car. If you're looking for a dragster, you might look for something domestic.
