how much blue RTV does it take to seal up your case

allot
and i mean allot. a guy that my girl friend knows has been asking me about porsches and has been looking for one. while i was away he called about a 77 911s and what i knew about it. after a quick talk he told me it belonged to the local porsche tech from the dealer and the dealership was selling it on consignment. it was a few years ago that the tech had owned the car so i asked him to wait till got into town. when i returned to town he was driving his new pride and joy.
i took the car for a drive and it ran good but shifted poorly, i asked him if he had a PPI done he said why should he the porsche dealer sold it to him. we took it into the garage for a quick look over and found that the bottom of the case was oozing oil and blue RTV.after a bit more inspection i found the whole motor had been sealed with this stuff. i told him to take it back and ask how this made it past inspection and he was told it was as is. but they did fix his sunroof apparently this wasn't as is?.
so as you might have guessed im resealing the motor the bearings and crank look good after a mic i have decided to clean crank and install new bearings seals.
i am now 18 hours into cleaning and still not even close to being done. long story short getting a second opinion would have saved a lot of work money for him. well i normally don't post anything like this but i came in from garage upset about how hard it is to clean off the RTV. so after the motor ill tear down the tranny and fix that as well. sorry for the vent but had to get that out.

cheers ed

Removing the stock thermo reactors and replacing with an updated SC system. also had a little help in the tear down.

That blue stuff looks like some sort of jointing compound ... Hylomar or another brand,it's not supposed to harden but rather stay flexible, obviously whoever used it put way too much although he should not have used it in the first place !
What a mess ...

a 2.7 with new main bearings will most likely bind the crank when the main through bolts are torqued up. read up on what needs to be done to a 2.7 case if it's to be reused. maybe you already know. those engines are nice when properly rebuilt, but a can-o-worms otherwise.

Why does that happen?

The mag case warps. Soon as you split the cases, they will spring a little. All mag cases are prone to this, it's just that a hot running 2.7 with thermal reactors does it the worst. That, and its spiggot holes are the biggest of all the mag cases, so that contibutes to their tendancy to warp. So, before it can be put back together, the mating surfaces need to be faced off true, then the mains need to be line bored.

I soak parts in Bar-sol that have any kind of silicone sealant on them. It will turn it into a goo that will wipe off. Leave it in the parts cleaner over night. You know if you have the right stuff by putting on a latex glove and getting some of the Bar-sol on it. The glove will grow and eventually disappear.

i did know about this and was thinking of reuseing the mains as they looked great when pulled from case, suposedly this case has been surfaced and line bored when the RTV was applied. that was 3600 miles ago acording to odometer. this motor is in no way getting a rebuild ! as he cant afford it. im just trying to help get him up and going for the summer. i was hoping for smooth crank rotation and he could have some time to figure out what hes going to do. "Get some money togather" not that it matters but when i split the case which was cake due to the RTV i did run through and retorque the center bolts and the crank was still smooth. i have a low millage 77 2.7 with studs and updates that runs great i was trying to sell him but hes not really interested. i even thought about giving it to him as a loner but then i really dont want to do that. so i have taken pics of everything and documented the condition of the motor brought him over several times to check things out and hes ok with the rolling the dice on this. am i in a can-o-worms or what
