Anybody know if this is original?
I took this off a 71 911 that had been sitting since 79. It looks like its still in the original gel coat and hasn't been painted. It is all fiberglass with no rubber lip and was mounted to a steel decklid. I don't see any part number, so I have no clue. Any ideas?

Hey guys. I crashed my Carrera at Lime Rock last summer. Unfortunately the 75' whaletail is trashed. But the sheet metal underneath is still good. I am posting here it for sale first vs. the parts for sale forum since you guys have these tails. Please PM me to discuss if you want it.

Real or Aftermarket Whale Tail?
Hi Guys I could really use some help on this particular tail. Is this a Real Early 3.0L Turbo and/or Carrera Whale Tail or Aftermarket? Please check out the pics below. I was told from several individuals that it is an Early 3.0L Turbo Whale Tail, I am not an expert but here is what I do know. It came on the car when I got it, and I know it is not original to my car (1977 911S 2.7L CIS Car).
I was going to sell this Tail and listed it here on Pelican Parts in Used Parts for Sale: FS: Early 3.0L Turbo Whale Tail It is ALL Fiberglass and it is in really great condition other than needing to be painted, there is no major damage/dents at all on it. The Rubber is a bit on the Dry side but not cracking or falling apart, in fact I had one party interested in just the rubber lip around it. below you will find the Pics of the tail: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I am still a Porsche Newb and after buying a magnet and going over the entire Decklid/Tail it does in fact appear to be ALL Fiberglass. I am glad that I went through this because the last thing I would have wanted was for anyone to feel that they got ripped, and/or for anyone to think I was trying to rip them off. I am certainly not going to let that happen! I was certain that it was metal and fiber glass but it fooled me and the only thing that was magnetic were the hinges, bolts and latch. I am happy to report though that my Rear SC/Carrera Flares are in fact metal, the magnet latched on nice and tight to them!!! Curios though you would think that someone (Aftermarket) Company would put some sort of identifier or brand name on it. The tail itself has been on my car for a long time. My car sat in storage for 18+ years, and has been an original CA car. I would say the original owner I got the car from probably added this tail at the same time they added the Rear SC/Carrera flares, and paint matched everything at that time. Wish I had someone to ask or documentation on this, I have no documentation on the car at all, other than a clean title. There are more images of the underside of the tail below: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Please let me know your thoughts and/or what you think it would be worth whether it is or is not original? I am not sure what to do and I want to make sure I do right by who I am selling it to or what I am in fact selling for sure. According to some of the posts here Some ALL FG tails came from Porsche directly? or is it true as some say that is not the case and Porsche did not offer all FG tails at all? I have read everything I can find but it seems there is nothing definitive, and it goes both ways with some saying yes and some saying no etc. Your guys knowledge and expertise is appreciated, and any feedback would be greatly appreciated! Here are a few links to some other info I have found/gathered regarding this type of tail (***If anyone else has any other info on these tails I would love to read and/or hear about it!): Porsche 911 evolution: Porsche 911 Turbo Simon's Porsche 911 SC Site What tail is this and could it be original? The original OEM tail thread collective documentation Factory original all glass whale tail or not? The Continuing Porsche Saga |

Woot!
I just scored this OEM '75 Carrera tail on Fleabay. Thought I'd add some photos for this thread. Seller was non-responsive and all I had to go on were some bad photos. I rolled the dice and won. This thread is what convinced me before I pulled the trigger.
FS: 1975-77 Carrera rear spoiler I sanded down to find the part number. 911.512.010.07 Metal base with fiberglass top. No second grill. Metal undertray. Notice no half-moon cutout like the later tails. Carrera emblem is intact with the posts but no nuts. Rubber is dry but otherwise cleaned up ok. -J ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

One more I forgot. Early Carrera script. Smaller than the later script and pinned on. -J

I pulled a couple of photos this morning but they don't show a lot more than can be seen in the quoted photo. I won't claim to be an expert but I've been around more bodywork than the average Joe. In my opinion the tail has not had any major work done to it and it's likely original paint. One coat of single stage black on the tail. I understand a shop could have stripped and painted the tail but they wouldn't have stripped the inside. On the rear outside shot you can make out the paint peeling. Similar spot on the inside.
Check out post #11 (white group 4 tail) and post #38 (red tail with small opening). Both share similar construction to mine. Body of tail is large sheets of square weave with chopped strand tape for reinforcement. One strip of chopped across the rear area of tail where the emblem would be and one strip across the underside of the "top" of the tail. It also looks like the strip of chopped strand could be holding down a stiffener of some sort. Looking up into my tail there is another strip of chopped strand reinforcing along what is the mount area for the rubber tail. -J

Nice score JAR! Was it sub 500?
Interesting that its metal frame without the semi circle cutout. Hmmm. Can't remember seeing one of these before... Again, good find! Cheers |

I'll just say shipping was more than the purchase price. The lack of cut out was bugging me until I found the for sale ad I linked. Ultimately the ad was one of those poorly worded ones that gets little attention. I ended up being the only bidder. -J

I have an early tail I,ve had for years in my shed. I originally took it off a 1976 or 77 Carrera 3.0 ROW car I had.
Based on info in this thread I located a part number on the middle lock brace. 911 512 010 07. BUT it is only a SINGLE grill tail. The same number in this thread shown as a 2 grill unit. It has the semi circular cutout in the metal frame. (so after 75 ?) Good rubber lip,no undertray. I assume it was for a non AC car as I recall the Carrera didn,t have AC. The buyer at the time wanted a Targa without a tail so I replaced it with a flat decklid I had then. I now believe it is an OEM tail. What year, model was it made for ? It needs some work as someone drilled a series of small holes above where the Carrera ID plate is , below the wing and not visible unless you bend over and look up.. Maybe in an effort to admit more air or ? No apparent separation from the frame and in good condition otherwise. I,ve had several PMs re this tail lately. Probably was original on the 76/7 3.0 Carrera WITHOUT AC as mentioned above. Why are the single and two grill wings made with the same number??? How rare is this part??
