Does anyone have an estimate of how many 4 Cams were built or how many are estimated to remain?

There were 717 type 547s built, something just above 318 type 692 and about 515 type 587. That is a total of about 1550 4-cylinder, 4-cam, Carrera “Fuhrmann” engines. I suspect there are a couple hundred more from racers, spare parts, etc.
….

That is a VERY rough estimate but I’ll bet not too far off.

Grady

16vguy, cool history your father has in the early Porsche world. Love that pic of the dirty C2 - driven like it was meant to. Please share more as you find them. Referencing the pic above, do I see a tow bar inbetween the 911 and the Spyder? That would be an intersting setup...

Son & I just got back from a massive Porsche day! - inaugural Longford revival motorsport show in Tasmania (weekend prior to Targa Tasmania). Stars of the show ? Several rather special P cars - 718RS , 356B 4 cam , 908 , 935 (Moby Dick) , 962, Carrera GT & Walter Rohrl's recently discovered & factory rebuilt 1981SC that he nearly won the '81 San Remo rally in , against all expectations.

I have lots of tasty photos and footage of the event but that will take some time to organise and upload.

In celebration of this great thread though I will share the legend himself , Klaus Bischoff , readying the 1960 356 Carrera 4 cam for a run on Longford's famous "flying mile". Enjoy & play loud ;)

Grady, need update, pretty please.....

MichiganMike 10-12-2011 04:16 PM

Agreed. Grady, any updates? Did they get a college fund together? Did the engine find its original parents? - Mother being the car and father being the driveline!

ghettoracer 02-04-2012 07:50 AM

Wow, this thread is awesome. So many great stories and photos!!

Big bump.

any updates on the sale of this Carrera engine... or the whereabouts of the Rometsch...did the speedster sell.... are the kids in college yet?

?

daepp 01-25-2013 09:15 AM

I another thread I do believe he said it sold - I even think he gave the amount. I will look.

stephenacworth 02-22-2013 04:48 PM

Updates and more info please on this wonderful story... shame I live in Canada so getting down to see you guys is difficult... but wanted to comment that Grady's knowledge and generosity mark him out amongst us: thanks for showing us the way to be...

Grady Clay 02-22-2013 08:46 PM

UPDATE:
Good news. The engine was sold to fill-in a 550A that had been using a 616 pushrod engine, now has an appropriate 4-cam.
The sale price was US$120,000.00. The money is invested in trust for the grandchildren’s education.
The (4) grandchildren are all elementry school age and younger so there should be significant capital appreacion over the next decade+.

All is well and everyone is happy.

Best,
Grady

HarryD 02-22-2013 09:29 PM

Great news!

Grady: Good to see you here. Hope all is well for you.

tazzieman 02-23-2013 02:05 AM

Hi Grady , will you please write a short story about this whole fairytale? Something along the lines of " a Cobra in the Barn" , but with several chapters and your technical insights? We would be very grateful; I'm sure it would become a little classic! cheers
