Gearbox problem

Hello All,

I have a problem with my gearbox ( type 915 - Porsche911 SC 1982 )
During a ride through the city, I can change all the gears without any problem, but
when I drive on the highway and stay for longer time in fifth gear, it is very difficult to return to 4th gear. I must pull very hard on the lever. Has anyone any experience with this problem?

Kind regards, Jan

I´ve heard of this problem before on 915 boxes. Its apparently a worn hub catching the shift sleeve.

It's all about technique. Never leave the car in 5th at speeds below 55 mph, and you will never experience the problem again! Simply change from 5th to 4th as you decel to below 60...problem solved!

...unless something really weird is going on.

I could never drop from 5th to 4th, I always have to bring the shifter up to third, then down to 4th.

that sounds like more of a shifter adjustment issue.

Since we're on the subject of 5th gear issues, how about this:

I have a difficult time finding 5th. Sometimes the shift goes smoothly, but last weekend the shifter got stuck in 5th. I was able to yank it back down to 4th - pausing in neutral first, of course - but don't want to repeat the experience.

Recently replaced pedal bushings, shifter bushings, shift cable, and helper spring. Clutch action is great and synchros seem good other than first gear being a bit balky from time to time. Synchros replaced about 25K miles ago, long before I bought the car.

Worn hub?
