Engine and transmission Trouble shootig help!
Hi everyone.... I am sorta new to the Porsche 911t world so forgive me if i misstate something..
Here is my issue... I few weeks back i changed the oil in my 901 transmission... the oil was very metallic loOKing and figured it had not been changed for a while. About a day later my car started making a squeaking sound almost like there was no oil in the transmission. when the car would cool off it would be fine but when it got hot it started again... I had originally put Penzoil 80 - 85 and thought maybe that was the issue so i went out and bought lubo molly at 25 bucks a litter to make sure i had the correct oil. The next day it got to the point were the noise was really loud and even started stalling the car. in order to start the car i would have to put the car in neutral and let go of the clutch. If i pressed the clutch the squeaking would start and the car would stall soon after... At this point i thought OK my trany is gone time to get a new one or rebuilt it. the shifting went fine. I have no syncro in the first gear but I manage without it no big deal. Today I decide OK I'm pulling the engine out and will take the tranny off to inspect the damage. SO my 901 turns well no noise i even shifted a gear or two and seems fine when i turn it by hand. My clutch needs changing for sure it's paper thin. So i try turning the flywheel by hand and when i do i hear a little squeaking and it is very difficult to turn by hand. BTW when i pulled the engine i drained all oil from the engine and oil tank.... Any ideas on where my problem may be.....? ![]() My car is a 1969 912 with a 1973.5 2.4 litter engine with webber carb configuration. the transmission is a 5 speed 901 year i'm not sure |

Throw out bearing is the problem. Replace it when you do the new clutch.

The throw out bearing is attached the the clutch pressure plate. The pilot bearing is pressed in to the flywheel. I would replace both.
Here is the page in the Pelican catalog.Porsche 911 Clutch & Flywheel - Page 3

I read it as he drained the fluids when he pulled the motor AFTER he found the squeak.

The oil is not back in the engine...the engine is out of the car and the transmission is off the engine.

When i would press the clutch the squeaking continued and the car would even stall

The throwout bearing is only operating when the clutch pedal is depressed. If the bearing was bad and dragging, that could cause the engine to slow, stutter, and stall.

Well, you can spin it with your hand and tell. If it feels like there is gravel in there it is bad.
![]() If there is too much play or it squeaks, it is bad. It is a sort of wear item like a clutch disc or brake pads and you replace it when the function degrades to the point that it annoys you- which it is now.

FYI the trouble I had with the flywheel... engine is difficult to turn... i pulled the spark plugs off the engine and problem went away...must have been creating a vacuum....
Also the throw out bearing was the cause ... The 901 transmission is fine... i need a new pressure plate clutch and fly wheel.... I have decided to purchase a 911 transmission from a friend... Anyone interested in a 901 let me know.. only issue is first gear syncro...besides that it shifted perfectly Thanks guy's for all your help! Last edited by ppanagis@gmail.; 06-01-2010 at 07:10 PM.. Glad to hear you found the problem. You can purchase a clitch kit that saves a few bucks. It will have all the needed parts.
Why are you buying a new transmission if the old one works fine?

A friend of mine got his hands on a 911 transmission from a 911s. he is including a clutch pressure plate and fly wheel. the throw away bearing is in great shape. The transmission is in perfect shape and i figured that i was looking at spending about 800 bucks anyways. he is asking for twice what it will cost me with my 901. All i need to do is change the clutch cable.
i heard the 911 transmission is a really good transmission...is that true? |

your last post seems to indicate that you are thinking that the 901 trans is NOT a 911 transmission. It is and was used from 65 to 71.
Is the "911 transmission" your friend has a 901 or a 915? The 915 started being used in 72. Not sure if you can just swap a 901 for a 915. It may require some additional changes. Other experts and posts about the early cars shoud be able to point you in the right direction.
