Rough starting 3.2: Sign of bad Injectors?
I've been noticing this season that the ol' girl is not cold starting as well as it used to. It fires up promptly everytime, but seems to initially stumble for 4 or 5 seconds like it's running on three, then four, then finally all cylinders. After the several seconds of rough running it settles into normal idle and can be driven right away with no problems. No backfiring, no stalling.
When the engine is warm it doesn't have this starting problem. The engine pulls strongly right up to redline in every gear so everything seems normal after it starts. It's just on cold starts that it has this problem. It's not serious, but I want to nip it in the bud. I haven't checked residual fuel pressure yet, will do that soon, as I understand this can affect start up (not a vapour lock problem...only occurs when cold). I was wondering if this might be symptomatic of clogged injector(s) with a bad spray pattern? Would injectors that are squirting a stream rather than a mist make the car rough starting but still run fine once the intake air is flowing steady? What are the other symptoms of old/weak injectors? ![]()

Brought my old gal up to running temp then put my DVM to the O2S and disconnected # 1 injector to obtain a base line reading then each injector one by one and found my #2 was going bad. Replaced all with BMW metal tipped refurbed injectors, absolutely no side effects.
