Random O-ring in shift linkage?

knowing that nothing is random in a Porsche engineers mind - can someone tell me what the o-ring on the shift linkage is for on an '87 G-50?

Sorry, no pic - I noticed it when replacing the boot that goes from the cabin to the transmission. There seems to be a boot AND an O-ring. I did look at the parts catalog but cant find a diagram of the linkage - just a parts list.

Thanks!

There is a Porsche TSB that describes using an O-ring or rubber band to stop some rattling in the shift linkage under that rear-seat floor tunnel, perhaps that's what you're seeing? Maybe it came loose from where it was...

Chuck is correct. Strange fix that only works for a little while until the o-ring permanently stretches.

My oring looks fine but seems way too loose to put any sort of pressure. I wish the pic was not so poor.
