dont know how long it was cracked

The crack was hair line, i had the dizzy out and was checking the springs etec and when i went to put it back in I noticed a nick in the cap.
I pulled on it and it cracked in half.

I did replace the wires last year so i think it was ok then. I do not remember if i put a new cap on then or not.
i have a spare so i put it on tonight and started it,, no time to adjust the timing etc
the crack was hair line and the nick i noticed was at the rim of the cap...
i think it had to be arcing at times.

The crack was ONE problem. The contacts look like a zit faced teenager working in a coal mine....

Cause for cap breakage?....possibly excessive force fitting the wires onto the cap?...and not knowing it at the time it was done?

Howsit feel with a new cap? The greenish color on the cap is corrosion of the brass contacts. MSD ignition? looks like strong CDI ignition burning (normal wear).

runs great

put the spare cap, adjusted timing to 5 btdc with vacuum and the car runs great.

I am amazed that it ran at all with this cap.

I do have an msd ignition with a pertronix ignitor.

Had a bad msd in the summer.

Easier to clean, you can do 3 contacts at a time!

good for a twin plug 3 cylinder.

I timed the engine to 5 atdc but did not try it at 6000 rpm for 35 atdc. For some reason that scares the heck out of me to run it to that without a load.

Is the 5 ATDC ok or should i time it at 6000

You should do it at 6000 and don't be scared, that's really the way to do it.

advance was 35 at around 3700

went to set timing at 6k,, did not get to 6k beforefull advance. I had 35 at aroun 3700

i am missing a distributor spring,, i think that may let the advance kick in at that rpm.

Is one spring something that was done intentionally? Will full advance at 3700 hurt the engine?
