What's the easiest way to kill the up-shift light?
Any suggestions for the best and easiest way to disbable the little orange arrow?

Yep, I checked the archives. Saw a few discussions on the matter, but nothing that I would say was difinitive.

Well the EASIEST solution would be a little piece of black electrical tape!

Freefly,
I was prepared for somebody like you! That's why I said best AND easiest. I guess a sledge hammer would work too! ![]() |

On one of my cars I took the bulb out. That was a lot of work, so the next car, I put a piece of electical tape over the arrow. These cars were my winter beaters not my 911. The tape might be a temporary fix.

one of the wires on the back obviously works it. which one would be a process of elimination, as the wiring diaghram does not show exactly which one. leave the reds and browns, and that narrows it down to about four suspects.

Perhaps best AND easiest are mutually EXCLUSIVE.
. .and perhaps not. Keep your foot into the gas and it turns off, only to come on again at the best shift point for that gear. Kind of a best econ & performance light, depending on intent. I suppose those engineers at Porsche saw this as the BEST and. . . best solution. |

I did this mod on my '86. I believe it was a black wire on the back of the gauge. I think I learned about it from an article in Pano years ago. The little light will still come on as a red line warning even after you disable it. When I'm at the track that little arrow just glows and glows.... (Suitably modified engine on closed course, do not try at home, yada yada.)

As someone else once stated, it is not the upshift light, it is the go faster light

There is definately a wire at computer under seat that [ I think ] is in plug in wire connector. The wire is same at dash and connector. It should be black, not sure. Should be in wiring dia.

I always thought it meant "hey there's more road ahead go faster dude".
![]() Seriously, I tried shifting with the light for a full tank of gas - and got way better mileage. It was torture though since I never crested 3500 rpm. If you're really hurting for gas money, follow the light. ![]()

J.B "Do you see the light?"
E.B "What light?" Don't appear to have these on euro cars, unless mine is stuffed (probably than). Why would you guys have econ lights with fuel at 50c a gallon? (get the film reference?)

Is not that light activated by vacuum? My QSW had it disconnected or at least it didn't work... until I was looking around the engine bay and found a vacuum line disconnected and plugged....I reconnected it...thinking it might be important and the light began to work. (Rather than disconnect...I just got used to it). I do believe that this was an attempt at improved mileage...and the optimal mileage was at a certain intake vacuum. I would imagine that there is some vacuum line that is directly connected to a sensor (as in the QSW) and it would be much easier to disconnect that than pull apart the dash. Then again...electrical tape sounds about the easiest! Brian

Actually, it just needs to be modified. Some electrical guru out to be able to tell us how to get to to flash when we're supposed to shift at peak HP!
I just hate that thing going on when I'm suppose to shift to save gas. "What's the arrow do?" "Um, it tells me to shift so I can get better gas mileage." "Oh." Yeah, that's really Porsche huh? I wonder if Joe Lambourgini has one of those little arrows telling him when to shift to get better gas mileage.

A small blemish on a beautiful lady is not even noticeable.
An anomalie that will be highly valued when the car is thirty. ".......and even the shift light still works". Let it be. |
