HELP!!!!! 901 pull style clutch, installing engine
I am trying to install an engine in a 1970 911 for someone and this early, or 901, pull style clutch sucks. I have the 3 tension bolts installed in the pressure plate, and got engine slid into trans, but I cannot even feel the fork. The fork is loose, and I know you have to turn the throwout bearing 90 degrees, once installed to lock it in. Does anyone have any tricks for this, or have done engine swaps, and have an idea on hooking the clutch fork to the throwout bearing. Thanks for any and all help.

The fork and throwout bearing are visible through the inspection holes on the top of the tranny bell housing area (the mating seam between the engine and tranny.) I use a flashlight to help see the fork ends and a screwdriver against the throwout bearing flanges/tabs to rotate it into the proper position. You start out by rotating the throwout bearing so that the tabs fit in between the fork arms, then you can pull on the actuator (cable) end of the fork, which will move the fork ends far enough towards the throwout bearing for you to then rotate the bearing tabs over the fork ends. Let go of the actuator end of the fork and you are done. I hope the instructions are clear. It's not hard, but a bit fussy. A thought just occurred to me.....these instructions are for when you have the engine and tranny removed from the car. If you are trying to do this with the tranny already in the car and attempting to mate the engine up................somebody else will have to jump in to help.

trans is in the car. I will try and see if I can get his kid to push the clutch in for me. I made tools, and tapped the holes in the pressure plate just like the original pressure plate had. With the bolts, it makes the throwout bearing move away from the engine. I took the engine out, but cheated, and just removed the pressure plate before seperating the engine and trans.

The clutch arm must be disconnected from the cable so you can articulate the arm with one hand while rotating the TO bearing.
Seeing what is going on is very difficult with the transmission in the car. Best, Grady

Thanks, That is good to know. I might just drop the trans loose, and roll everything back out. All I did last night, was get the engine lined up with the trans, and slid everything to gether, and had to back it off about 1/4" because of the pressure plate release bolts I have in, are a little longer than they should be. Thanks for the help. I am going to try a mirror, and the owners kid first, and see if we can get it on before dropping it. Thank you again.

you were definitely doing it the hard way. you actually do not need the 3 bolts to collapse the p/plate either. you can do it in the car, but it's hard to get through the hole in the bellhousing to turn the t/o bearing 90°, so all 70/71 engine and trans get removed as a unit. bolt the trans tight to the engine before trying to align the fork and t/o.

Drop the trans.....it will take almost no time and the mating of the trans and engine will become much easier. Also, JW is correct, you can do this without using the three bolts to collapse the pressure plate. I just did this, last weekend.

Thanks for the help. It took me 5 minutes, and it was done. I cheated. When I got back out there, I removed the top left bolt, and put the starter bolt in that hole. Pulled the engine back, the used saftey wire to hold the fork forward. I used a mirror to see the bearing, and lined it up, and pushed the engine back in. I turned the bearing, and removed the 3 bolts. It turned out easier than I thoiught. Thank you all, for the help. I wanted to give it a shot before pulling the trans, and it paid off.
