Downhill both ways, or it's busted

Or, I'm dreaming.

Detail for los angelesites: went down burbank to where it meets woodley, turned onto woodley and hit the straightway right there.

Last night I did this. I stopped and set up the G-Tech pro.
And let her rip like it was my final car ride. The smell of clutch was overwhelming. Didn't slam it into 2nd until it was near 7k (chip allows for).
The result:

5.19 S

Okay...obviously, it's downhill, so I went home and ignored it. Then I went back today during lunch, and hit the same road going the other way. This time, didn't let it rip so much, but much more aggressive than the ones a few days ago.
The result:

5.46 S

Has anyone heard of a 3.2 with mods doing this? Especially a US spec?
Funny thing is, this is the same accelerometer I used to test when I was getting 6.2, 6.18 etc a year ago. Since then, I have lightened the car, chipped it, fixed the sticking front caliper, flared the fenders (they rubbed), removed all of the ac, fixed the clutch coupler so it shifts very fluid and very fast (like a newer car does, which it definitely didn't do before). Replaced all 6 injectors with new ones, got a new air flow meter (since mine was totally broken and I failed emissions almost as a gross polluter). Lots of fairly small things. But do they add up to this?

The only way I can verify this is to go hunting. Which is what I'm going to do: Vettes, 993s, 996s, M Roadsters. If this modded carrera is a 5.2-5.5 S car, I ought to put the smack down

Red face

Kurt's out of control! I think you've been watching too much Speedvision and NHRA events.

Just think how much you could lower your 0-60 if you removed the cab top...

The thing really got those readings. I'm wondering if it's busted now--if I could start off in third and work my way up to 60 and it would blink 5.8, 5.8...

It'd be nice if it were accurate. That's why I want to know what other modded 3.2 Carreras have gotten down to!
Anyone?

G-Techs are known for being a little on the optimistic side (like a tenth or two), but those are fantastic times. You've got to get yourself to a speedway, and do a few quarter miles on the clock. If you do a search on the web, I'm sure you could find some Mopar club or something who's got an event set up.

I would also advise that you start putting aside a little cash for a 'bail money and clutch work' fund.

my stock 85'targa (3.2) on a gtec ran a 6.0, 4 different times on a local stretch of road. my omni glh(2.2 turbo) on the same gtec ran 6.4 on the same road
the 911 has much better legs though and no wheel spin which makes me think gtec's aren't as consistant as people may think.
my opinion

That's a good point. I will say, it's the same accelerometer that gave me vastly different numbers a year ago; and I couldn't get that damn thing to get me under 6 seconds no matter what I did!

But this is not the same car by any means. Those small things do add up.

I optimistically think it might be a 5.5 or 5.6 car. Just a guess.

But as Jack rightly points out. I need to find a place where I can do this safely and soundly--an event. I should also pick up another accelerometer and run them both and compare!
Wait, only one lighter. Can't do that.

Thanks for the info. Don't think I'll be buying a gtech. Money better spent on a V-1?

Kurt,

Go find a copy of the '82-'83-ish flic ... 'King of the Mountain' with a crazed Dennis Hopper trying to beat the stopwatch up Mullholland ... the ending isn't pretty!

I have seen road tests of the 3.2 's that list the 0-60 around that, so it is possible. All you need to do is punish the clutch and transmission!

My G-Tech seems to be pretty accurate.
The V8 S10 that I use as a daily driver has been down the quarter mile strip many times. Posts a consistant 14.2 @ ~100mph. This is also what the G-Tech reported.
I ran my SC and got in only one good run. Ironically it was also a 14.2. Haven't taken it to the strip, but this time does seem about right for a lightened car with a warmed over engine.

Only one real way to get accuate numbers - go to the track.

Wow, I was just doing this tonight!

Here's my results My best one was a 5.4x, but I didn't take a picture because I thought I could top it.

Mind you, I'm running without a shift knob, so it's a bit of a chore to do the 1-2 shift... And I *really* need to work on my launch - I have the Kumho V700's mounted right now, and I'm still getting a lot of wheelspin! There's a light fog outside right now too, which may be making the streets damp. Is that enough excuses? I can make more!

Well, that makes me wonder about my results altogether. Then again, my car's trashed from doing that so who knows!

Nice results. I wish I could find a nice spot and test again after the car's done and do it without the stress of the cops around every corner.

In any case, shifting is the most crucial part of it. I have no lag time between first and 2nd. It is a very fast shift. So fast in fact that my clutch said 'F!ck you!'
