newbie introduction

Guess I should introduce myself- never owned a Porsche before. Just recently traded my neighbor an HVAC system (my cost around 8K -I own an hvac company) for his 1983 911SC with 92K miles. Left rear quarter panel needs repaired. Engine has recently been removed and had major service. Seats, dash and stereo are good. Rear deck and headliner needs replaced. Power antenna needs attention. Just put on new set of Kumho's and replaced the front trunk lift supports. Also installed new center air vent unit on dash. Car runs like a top.

jmccam - I think the guy 2 before me had it resprayed. There is one spot where it is nicked and the color under looks more like yours. Wondering if I should just bite the bullet and have the whole car repainted when I have them fix the quarter panel. The 2 body shops said they would paint that whole side of the car anyways. (there is a little dent up by the headlight too on that side that needs fixed) Thoughts?

Mine has had some clear coat repair done to it prior to my owning the car and I too will eventually repaint the whole car. Upon close inspection you can see paint imperfections but it is a driver and not a trailer queen so these are just points of character to me. I am trying to do refurbishment in stages so a paint refurb will be down the road as a really good paint job will cost a good chunk of change.

My only real concern is finding someone who can match the color. I prefer the lighter metallic bronze look over the darker.

As far your particular car, it really is about preference. If you are going to paint the entire side of the car then maybe a whole paint refurb is a better investment. I would enjoy the car a little bit and make sure there are no major mechanical concerns and then plan the stages of what is most important to you...aesthetics or performance.

Right now I have a strong running car that does have some blow-by and will need a rebuild eventually but I have significant performance wants so right now I am focusing on getting the car cosmetically back to snuff primarily on the inside and then I can focus on the big stuff.

I am weekend gear head and have loved Porsches my whole life, but I too am learning the intricacies of these cars. They are very addictive. My wife says I smell like a two cycle engine when I come in from playing and driving in it. I am just happy she knows what a two cycle engine is.

Welcome and congrats! Hey that looks like my old neighborhood. I lived in Lee's Summit.
Headliner-mine was badly oil stained. Had it stained/sprayed black for $100.
Rear deck- Usually an easy fix or just buy another one. What's wrong with yours?
Respray-I got a Griot's Garage buffer ($125) and polished it...a lot! Much easier than a repaint.
How are the motor mounts? Wish someone had told me to replace them years ago. Cost $50.
