Shift boot

On my 85 Carrera, the rubber shift boot has a leather shift bag/boot over it. I don't know why. I looked under the leather boot and the rubber boot is just fine but it does not seem to have a tight fit at the bottom. Like it needs a large clamp or something. Could someone please tell me if I just need a new boot or is there a clamp I can order that will make the bottom of the boot seal? Rubber boot looks in good shape, just sloppy at at the bottom. Also, rubber boot looks factory like others I have seen. Than you, Nick

I don't have one but I think they have a string around the bottom and just tie in.

If you have a center console, you need to undo the console then tuck it in and slip the whole assembly over the rubber boot at the same time tuck in the left over leather up the side of the console.

Do not bundle it up or it may bind and squeek like crazy, just spread it out evenly and you will be good to go. Some have pulled up the leather boot to give it a more loose feel but it will look saggy and acordian look, I chose a tight and snug look.

Before you tighten the console down make sure it is centered and use a pin tool or long thin nail to find the holes through the carpet so you wont inadvertently make another unwanted tap whole.

Jim

Dang it Jim, you did it again! Thanks. Today I took some scissors and cut off the old terrible worn out leather boot that someone put over the whole unit. The rubber boot looks so much better. I'll tuck it in, Nick

Yeah, tucked mine in on the aft side with a plastic putty knife or somethin'; comes free once in awhile, sure looked tacky hanging out a bit....amazing how a little thing can screw up the looks of one's interior (the car, I mean)....
