blast cabinet tech - or - most embarassing moment?
I've been using my blast cabinet with glass beads to clean up some aluminum parts. works beautifully, cleans the alum without damaging the surface. soda blasting is a bit nicer to tough to manage without the proper, and expensive, equipment.
I was having a problem with static build-up. I was getting a lot of static charge building up in the cabinet then jumping to the closest points of my body to the cabinet. usually my chest ( nipples) and lips ( as I was looking through the window). this was understandably annoying with the latter, and not at all as pleasant as some might think with the former. after some thought I figured I needed to ground my skin to the cabinet. the only way I could really see to do that was to hike my shirt up around my armpits and lean my chest (nipples) against the cabinet. well, it worked great! no more shocks at all. so I'm happily blasting away on my parts when my wife walks into the garage. only to find me with a naked chest and in a compromising position with my blast cabinet. what can one really say in a situation like that. anyway, FWIW this method does eliminate static shock but may cause talk. |

Find a good electronics shop and get a static wrist strap. Ask for an ESD (Electro Static Discharge) strap/cable.
Connect the strap to the blast cabinet chassis and attach it to your wrist. This will shunt the charge to ground before it reaches more *ahem* sensitive parts of your body.

If your wife were using the cabinet I'd say post some pics, but in this case I'd say just connect a wire from the cabinet to the nearest copper pipe or electrical ground.

Yes you have to ground or bond the nozzle to the cabinet and then to a good ground in the garage. you can use common wire like 12 gage. This is a common problem.
