82 911 SC battery apparently does not exist!
Hello everyone,
I did a search on this but couldn't find anything. I need a new battery for my 82 911SC and want a good one, specifically an Odyssey, which is also sold under the Sears Die Hard Platinum name. But the Sears counter person said she had no listing for any battery for an 82 911 SC. I went to an Odyssey dealer, and his listing went from 78 to 81, I think - then started up again in 83. Nothing listed for 82. I plan to measure the dimensions of the battery and try to cross-reference one that will fit, but wondered if anyone here knew what's up with the strange gap for that year? No idea, but I just replaced my six year old Sears battery with a new Sears battery - in my '82 SC. Mine fits the hold down bracket in the shorter of the two positions available on the floor. I can find the receipt later this morning if that will help.

I am very happy with my drop in replacement from Autozone - it is a good one - starts the car every time. Last one served me well for years...............on a daily driver.

Pete, the reference from your receipt might be helpful, thanks. I'm sure I can measure the battery and find a fit; I'm just curious why two very large battery supply sources had no listing for a 1982 SC in their computers!

that is crazy!
I think the Sears Gp 48 works for all 911 through 89. Its the smaller of the two. The Gp 49 is the larger one.

LOL Last time I went to the FLAPS and asked them to give me a battery for the car they pulled out this beast that was about 6" longer than any battery I had ever seen... I told them I didn't think it would fit in my '82 SC. "Oh no sir, it says right here on the computer its the right one."
Needless to say I had to return it as it didn't even come close to fitting. I bought an Optima Red top and it lasted through 10 years of deep cycling and winters... then I put it in my Beetle and ran it for 4 years before selling the car  I put another Red Top in the 911 for obvious reasons...So be careful of what they tell you at the store -Michael

I was a fan of Optima batteries very early on (1993). My first one lasted almost eight years. However, recently their quality control has become hit and miss at best. Odyssey is the new Optima.

Looking at the Batteries Plus website, it lists the Group 49 for all years from 74-79, then 83-89. Frankly I don't know of any big bumper 911 that didn't take the Group 49, but it is odd that the '82 is missing from so many battery listings.

I've only used Optimas in all my cars and have very good results. I've bought them at Costco. On some models you may need to fit an adaptor plate made of a plastic chopping. Do a search here for the dimensions.

Update: I pulled the dead battery, which the PO had simply stuffed in there. The factory clamp and bolt are long gone. I ordered a new one from our host. Now I understand that to fit as the factory intended, any replacement battery has to have a lip around the base to nest in the stationary bracket and the removable clamp. Easy to measure and find one to fit, but I have a head start with your suggestions. Thanks very much to everyone.

There were two sized batteries available for my '81. The bigger one was almost impossible to get in, and because of modern battery technology, there is no need to use it. I can't imagine the '82 is any different.

I bought an Optima at Sam's that had the posts to the inside of the car; had to buy a battery tray to fit the clamping system (eBay has them) and a longer negative cable, but now I have extra space in front of the battery to store the air compressor.
