Easy, O-Rings, one or two and call me in the morning :P

The O-ring/s will eliminate all slop and make a nice tight seal from moisture intrusion.
Just slip it on your bulb and then slip it in the socket, it will be tight, if the O-ring migrates up, use a small flat head screw driver to push it back on to the edge of the socket. THAT's IT!

any replacement socket would fit or only certain size?
I made my own "tool" to fit my GPS everytime I use it in my 911, free, but I will need this because my "tool" will fall off when you put the plug off the socket. It is simply a folded small piece of paper

Well, any accept OEM type, it will not fit in between the OEM cig lighter anyways due it being the same diameter.

Basically you need a slight thinner diameter replacement socket to slide snuggly into the OEM socket, but not too loose or it will come out with your device.

No, it will not work with the OEM lighter, if you smoke you need the new modern kit with lighter.

Just wanted to revive this thread and give a big shout out to Jim for such a cheap, simple and useful upgrade.

I was at my local FLAPS to dump some used oil after my regularly-scheduled change. Remembering that I had recently picked up a $15 voltmeter that has been a little wobbly in my stock cigar lighter, I decided to give Jim's solution a go.

Here's the result:

OK, not the greatest image in the world, but you get the picture.

So, $15 for the voltmeter, $4 for the lighter sleeve, and about 10 minutes of labor, and I have a great little voltmeter installation that can be installed and removed in a snap, and all my chargers and converters now fit like a glove.

Big shout out....Thanks again, Jim. One of these days during one of my surfing trips to SD, I promise to take the short trip up to buy you a beer or 6.

Hey there - sorry to bump an old thread. I gave the good Dr's fix a try and didn't have success. I couldn't get an electrical connection with the insert in place, but when I removed it I could. I purchased the exact lighter replacement well as pictured, and cut off the bottom 3/8" as suggested. Any ideas why it isn't working?

Thanks!

Hey Dan,

Do you have a DVM ( Digital Volt Meter )? Let's check to insure you have a good 12v and ground.

I would guess maybe it needs to be shaved down a bit more so the 12v source is not making contact with the new sleeve.

You see the idea is the center contact is your 12v and the side wall is you ground. once you place you device into the socket, it will close the circuit. If the sleeve is too long, it may cause a closed circuit and not allow your device to close. Hope that makes sense.

Jim

Thanks for the advice, Jim. I'll shave it down a bit more tomorrow and see if that works.

Cheers,

Success! I whittled the well down a bit more, but that didn't work. So, how I solved the problem was by switching to a slightly longer charger. The one I had been using was a bit, uh, underendowed, shall we say, and I don't think the tip could make contact once I put the sleeve in. Once again, size does matter. ;-)

Give the good Dr. my thanks for his fix, and thanks again, Jim, for the advice!

Yes, from the FRUNK, you have to remove all fresh air plumbing to get behind the dash, sorry to write.
