Yes thanks, I know that now. I'm asking how to get the actual socket assembly out of the dash. It isn't obvious so far. :-(

Oh Poop. I see what you mean now. I thought it was held on by tabs inside the tube and the power connected to the back.

Sorry I am not being too much help here:-(

If you have the blower out, that's the hard part. There is one vent to the dash that pulls out to expose the rear of the cigarette lighter socket.
Good luck,
Dave

To finish off my documentation I'll put my version of the Dr. B process here.

Luck may have played a part - the O'Reilly's assembly (10210) tab ended up in exactly the right spot on the stock 89 Porsche can to be used as a lock so the new inner sleeve doesn't slid out easily.

Where to cut part.

Cut and Ready to Insert - Tabs will be bent out slightly

Assembly Ready for Dash Install

Installed - View from Frunk

Installed - View from Inside Car

USB Outlet - Ready for 2 Cell phones (USB converter device now held firmly)

Now just need to put the blower/etc. back in the car.

I didn't go this far to replace the whole unit but can verify that the part from O'Reilly's is still available and works!

For a 5 minute project I bought the unit (Part# 10210) cut it down, bent the tabs a bit more outward at the very edge to "grab" the hole (of the original lighter) and after a few tries got it to stay put.

Since mine was the original and has had much use (200,000 miles, many phones and GPS chargers) it "ain't perfect" but is definitely a great improvement.

I think replacing everything (as above) is the right way to go but again, I can verify this simple process works as a quick fix if you just cut the aftermarket and slide the sleeve in.

I tried two different USB converters and both fit differently - that alone is part of the problem - as an FYI. Replacing the whole unit as the above poster did might solve that since mine is so old.

Many thanks 'hcoles'!

This was on my 1986 Coupe.

Take care all -
Erik

My cigarette lighter almost started a fire in my 911 yesterday. I posted about it here.

Here's a video showing how I think mine shorted out. I should add that I've been using this mod for 30,000 miles without a problem, but I think I just got lucky. Hoping this info can save someone else from having to tear out their crispy fried harness!

Ah man,

Sorry to read about your troubles Jameel, that indeed sucks big time.

I have a metal clad LED light in my modded lighter port. I just checked my insert and it is about 1/4" away from the side "+" tabs.

Every time my wife plugs in her power cord she just loves to twist it, I have no idea why but she never shorted it out

Based on Jameel’s video above, I’m concerned about using the Dr. B mod. Is there a better way to overcome this problem? Any chance that the modern version of the lighter from Porsche is the correct modern size? That way I could just replace the old part with the new. Or I suppose I could hack up the current lighter to make sure there is no way a short would occur.

Any ideas I’m missing?

loose cigarette lighter

So, is the stock Carrera cigarette lighter larger than today's 12V adapters? My '85's is loose when I plug in a modern adapter. I thought the socket was loose and old, so I was about to purchase a new one, but this thread implies the stock socket is a little large for today's hardware.

Leave the car OFF while doing this mod. Pull fuse or disconnect battery for safety.

Just highlighting this for the future mods people might do.
