Trans grinds into 3rd and won't go into 5th

Helping my BIL this past weekend try to get his SC back on the track, got a lot accomplished. But after we dropped it down and took it for a ride there were some trans issues. Clutch and shifter are all set up right, we played with it to see if it made any difference and it didn't.

Car goes into 1, 2, 4 and Reverse just fine. But grinds into 3rd even if you try to very slowly upshift. And it won't go into 5th at all. Doesn't matter if the car is sitting still or moving, can't get it into 5th. He was having shifting problems at the last track event of last season too.

I'm thinking he's got two unrelated problems, I can't see any relation between the two issues. Wish it could be something as simple as dropping the shift fork cover off and checking that the 3 nuts are tight, but I don't see how that would cause the grinding going into 3rd.

Car's an SC with a 993 vram, short 5th, Guard diff.

Thoughts?

3rd gear sounds like a synchro. 5th is anyone's guess, will it go in with the engine off?

Agreed on 3rd.

No, won't go into 5th at any time. And there's plenty of space between the shifter and the hard rubber bumper in the shifter. I even exaggerated the shifter adjustment such that it was hard getting into 1-2 to see if that would help but didn't. Goes into reverse exactly as it should.

I'm afraid his trans needs to come out.
