an SC in my future?

Here's the story - I'm nearly finished with a '73 RS clone project, primarily for use on the track but it will get a workout about every weekend (3rd car/toy). I'm thinking of getting an SC for an everyday driver. Why? Because I've always liked the body style of the SC and a very nice one should fit my budget at under $20K. Would prefer excellent condition, sunroof coupe for use at about 350 miles/week. There's no hurry as I have to unload a leased SUV first (remember how much fun shopping was?!).

Any comments on things like reliability and/or eccentricities unique to the SC? How do the years differ - were the '83s the ultimate? Any research material you can guide me to? Any other suggestions or caveats?

Personally, I prefer think the 78 is the ultimate SC. Just my unbiased opinion.

On a related note, I was just updating my 'Links' page, and I don't have a link to any kind of 'SC Registry' page. Is there one? It seems that a Porsche model with such a devoted following should have a registry out there.

I know my opinion is biased, but I love my SC and for the money, I think it's the best bang for the buck. Relativly easy to work on, and pretty good performance. After talking to mechanics though, try to get an 80-83, because they have the O2 sensor, and are easier to smog (according to my local wrench).

Don't worry, we've been monitoring the thread and discussing it among ourselves. We just can't tell you anything until we get the background check completed. We don't let just anyone in, you know. There's already been talk of censuring the previous SC owner posting to the thread.

I do believe the '83 models were the ultimate. Of course I do. They have higher compression (8.6:1 versus 9.3:1 I think, or thereabouts) though the same horsepower was specified for both. The later models have the metal cold start manifold that reduces but does not eliminate air box explosions. I'd agree they are easier to smog with the O2 sensor and frequency valve helping to lean the mixture to precise levels. They also have metal fuel lines and several other improvement goodies.

the one benefit of the earlier SCs is the larger intake ports which are better if you're going to go with some performance mods. For example, the earlier heads would be best for increasing displacement with the 3.2 P&C set and adding cams and Webers.

All in all though, there is not a huge difference between the early and late ones.
