No room!!
Hi all, just a quick question l live in the middle of outback Queensland as a driller at the local underground mine(copper). We are about 900klm from the coast, Townsville. l am thinking about taking my 89 3.2 Carrera there for a run to see the V8 Supercars next year, the misses in the front and the 3 and 5yr olds in the back.We will be taking minimum luggage l was thinking of packing the hood just like a big suitcase
![]() ![]() ![]() l have pulled the spare out and pumped it up she's good to go ![]() Last edited by Gerry van; 04-11-2011 at 04:12 AM.. |

Sounds like you need a roof rack with one of those aero pods. Pretty car BTW.

What about a roof rack? If you can find one, you can probably make a platform to secure your spare and a suitcase. It won't do much for aerodynamics, but it could keep things more comfortable for passengers.

...or you could ship the things you'll need once you get to your destination. Then you only have to have "carry-on" essentials in the car.

Nice Car!
![]() I think a roof rack is a good idea. An aerodyamic one- maybe even shaped like a big Can-Am Chapparal wing. ![]()

Yeah l guess l didn't think of that , my wife suggested we either tow it there or get it trucked there and then take it up the coast for a run, but it kinda takes the fun out of it after all 911's are made to drive and they are well known for their reliability

Well, my proposal to you is to pack light, and if worse comes to worse - the kids will have to spend part of the road with the laundry in their lap, until you get to someone who can fix the flat.
Or, there is someone selling a custom hitch and trailer (!). I am now eager to see who has a 911 station-wagon :-)

Leave spare home. Take a plug kit and 12-volt compressor. Done it for year on my motorcycle, I always gets me in.
I've driven a little of that general area. Mackay to Emerald and back to Hervey Bay...Prettly lonely out there at times.............

Yeah remoteness between towns is a problem and road quality is some areas is how you say schit, but it all adds to the adventure, l suggested my wife drive the patrol and follow me in the porsche but she's not keen, it'll take the fun out of it she reckons.

Why will spare not fit? Can you fit in a 965 spare?

"Credit Card, Auto club card, cell phone - shouldn't take up much room at all"
Provided that there is cell phone coverage. Provided that there is an Auto club or AAA or CAA representative. Provided that the vendor takes credit cards. I have lived and traveled throughn locales where all of those three would be a great big NO. And that was in Canada. Fix a flat and a compressor are wonderful - if you don't thoroughly bugger up the tire or shred it before getting a chance to try out the fix a flat stuff. Happened to me on a desolate stretch of Arctic roadway shortly after a grizzly passed in front of the vehicle. With a grizzly in the area and a good 60 km hike to the nearest garage I was glad to have the full size spare. jb

The OP's talking about fitting the road wheel in to the car somewhere - it's significantly bigger than the spare.
.... But probably not too big to fit in the boot. Agree with the idea of pulling out whatever you need to from the boot to fit the tyre in, then shove it back on top of the kids. You might want to consider some sort of tyre carrier bag to put the tyre in - it'll be all covered in red dust etc, which you may not want inside the car... Sounds like alot of fun! And speed limits are, shall we say, optional out there too!! ![]()

Hi Gerry,
I always carry a puncture repair kit (aerosol goo and compressor) in all my cars, great for lowered cars as the jack wont fit under. If you already have a compressor all you need is 2 cans of goo. Much easier to try a roadside repair first than change a tyre. Regards Dominic. |
