Crazy death wish

Was just searching for some alternative ideas on jacking my 911 up to retorque the head studs and I ran across this. Amazingly stupid! Makes my hair stand up.

Anybody used one of these exhaust jacks with a 911?

Another great invention, the Exhaust Air Jack | One More Gadget

Looks like it would work... other than dangers of our heat exchangers melting a hole in the bag.

I like the ladder to access the car from the ground. Nice!

I just did mine and backed it up on ramps to adjust the valves. Worked OK. Cheap. It has the advantage that the car slopes to the front which helps drain all the oil from the valve covers to one spot at the front where it can be caught in the drain pan and not drip on me.

If you't got one of those jack inserts from pelican just pop out the cover and put the jack insert in and jack that sucker up. I've been using it on my 914 and 911, you'll just need a jack that'll get the car high enough that you feel comfortable under there. Just don't forget jack stands to go with it lol.

Thanks CorsePerVita. I've actually got the lolly pop, 3.5 ton floor jack.. and jack stands. It's just a heavy instrument to pack around when you don't have a garage.

I'm a total ghetto Porsche owner... Hehe. I did my rebuild in my apartment.

Anyway, the exhaust jack would be a nice alternative for me if others felt safe using it. I'm probably not going to use it since it doesn't sound like a lot of 911 owners have tried it.

I like to play it safe...

It would be interesting to hear if anyone had used it successfully.

I might have misunderstood your post there CorsePerVita. Did you say you use the exhaust jack with the lolly pop?

If the runway is stirdy as the 4 poles lift runway, and the pipping is strong steel, I would love it. umm... now I am thinking of digging a big hole in my garage. Thick steel isn't that expensive is it?

I'll bet $100 that there's a banjo in the trunk.

I remember there was something like this right across the street from my Grandma's when I was a little kid. Was right in the middle of a city neighborhood though. Germantown in Pgh. An old guy( probably about my age now) was always working on his antique cars on a ramp like that. I think his was a little heavier duty though. I remember rr ties for the ramps, and uprights, built right off a large stone wall next to the street. They would never let you do that now.

The exhaust jack makes me nervous, too. Easy for the car to roll or slide once it's up.

What's wrong with a good set of jack stands? Or drive-on ramps for the back end?

No I just use a regular floor jack. I'm the same way though, I have a limited space when it comes to working on my car. However, I have a friend who was nice enough to let me use his lift. I really really really really wish I had one of my own. Perhaps next garage lol.

As to rebuilding stuff in apartments.....

I've done that before

I have a small Japanese car scissor jack that I carry in the spyder. It works very nicely to jack a vehicle up.

If you are ever desperate to get underneath the car with no need to remove the wheels, and have absolutely no jack, here's what I do.

Driveways are sloped on the sides to meet the curb (as the curb is about 6" higher than the driveway). Put two wheels in the driveway, parallel to the road, drive forward so that two of the tires are on the curb and two of the tires are on the road. Set the brake.

This looks a little redneck, but all four tires are resting on a hard surface, one side of the car 6" higher than the other (switch if you need to get to the other side), it is actually quite safe. I absolutely GUARANTEE you can drop the starter out doing this - had to do it myself one time - LOL! Fix a CV joint, etc.

A guy down the street from me has wooden ramps jammed into the side of a hill, then supported by blocks. It's a miracle it hasn't fallen down yet!
