It's hard to tell from the photos, but those kind of look like bronze bushings already.

Oh, that sounded like a fun rod though....

....werent they bronze bushings from the get go? I don't think my pedal sub-assembly has ever been out of the car....

Stock are plastic. If you have bronze you have the aftermarket ones.

Day 193 || Final Paint is On!
16Jan2012
Finally top coated the Wurth SKS Stoneguard that I was able to lay down this past Sat. with the help of KT911rs. I am highly pleased with the finish.

Taped off areas I didn't want to get overspray on.

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-e...-09-12_778.jpg

Of course I am painting at the colded time of the year and during a Seattle 'snow storm'.
https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-X...1-48-34_14.jpg

Even with the garage door open it actually stayed fairly warm where I was painting. The halogens help.

Now I can start hanging some suspension and turn my attention to the motor! :D

The nights progress..

I need to get new cotter pins but the pedal assembly is basically back together.

Finally all the tape and masking are off :)

Virginal! Methinks a running motor is not too far off...

Day 199 || We have fire!
22Jan2012
Slapped the suspension on to move the 'good' car out of the way and bring the donor car in to futz with the motor and prep it to see if it will even run. Some progress shots....

In the morning the car looked like this..
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-4...-12-34_721.jpg

mid morning..
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-S...-29-54_109.jpg

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-N...-10-50_488.jpg

The Bastard Hot Rod gets moved out of the way and the donor car is finally rolled into the shop. A good friend of mine comes over who knows his way around 911 motors and helps me do some trouble shooting and diagnosis. (Actually I did a lot of watch and learn...)

The motor is a 2.7 out of a 911S.
https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-t...-16-44_180.jpg

The motor turns over smoothly by hand, the plugs look clean, the fuel pump works...lets crank this b*tch....and viola'....fire! The motor runs after sitting for 5ish years!!! (you were right Kenik!)

Video- We have fire!!!!

I am amazed! This motor sat for many years and with very little fuss it fired right up! No weird noises, no rocker noise... Plenty of smoke though! It settled down as the engine warmed up

Day 199 (cont.) || We have fire!
22Jan2012
Next thing I know I am getting a tutorial on how to drop a motor in under 2 hours :D

The stacks are extremely clean...and I am very surprised

It appears the gamble has paid off! Very nice. What's next? Clean up this motor, pull the tired lump from the blue car, tidy the engine bay, install and assess? Looks to me like a test drive could happen in a week's time or so!

kenikh 01-22-2012 05:46 AM

BTW, any info on the trans? What is the series number? Standard late '69 mag 901 or ???

1-ev.com 01-22-2012 06:23 AM

Did the fire alarm went off ... I do not see FD arriving ... :-)

bottom line - Congrats Bryan ....!!!

al lkosmal 01-22-2012 09:05 AM

Bryan,
Excellent!!! A running 2.7 is a good thing. One of my favorite engines. I'd run that up a bit to get it good and warm and do a leak down and compression test? You had a great "special effects" scene going there for a while....................but a little bit of oil makes a $hit load of smoke, so you may be in good shape here. Congratulations.............you are close................even if the engine requires a tear down. Tranny ok?
regards,
al

PS: those webers look nice.

PSS: (just got back from work in Las Vegas.........I got to head for the sun, while you guys were getting slammed with the snownami, but it took a little extra time to get back.)

Rich Lambert 01-22-2012 10:24 AM

Very cool Bryan! You'll be out on the road in no time.

combatic 01-22-2012 12:41 PM

@Al- yeah the smoke cleared up some after running it. The plan is to tidy up the motor and tranny then make it pretty. Then make the engine bay pretty and get it running + driving in the car and do some shake down and get some #'s for compression & leak down. I have to start thinking big picture to make sure she is road trip worthy by may :) tyranny condition and gear ratios unknown at this time.

@Rich- yes sir! I hope to be able to start driving around locally and get this thing operational..Lots of details left to do but now I am pretty motivated again!

I am going to start scraping grime and grit off today and get the motor on the stand today. I will post up case #'s later...but who knows if the contents are factory....

al lkosmal 01-22-2012 03:42 PM

This is the fun part. Take off the cam chain covers to I.D. the cams and it's borescope time to view the pistons.......................it's like an archeological dig.

Al

Sweet!.....Looks like Brandon was the good luck charm. You will be doing a shake down WAY before me. Nice work on the pedal Cluster, arn't you glad you did the bushings after all? Keep at it!

Yeah, he must be! What would have been weeks of me tinkering was resolved in what? 4 hours? Brandon has the skills to pay the bills. The car could move soon?! Lots of cleaning and grime removal is in my future this week! Thanks again for the paint help and the knowledge! btw- Kenik has a harness bar for me until a roll bar can be fab'd up ;) I am going to drive over and see your project ok :D

Great progress. I think I have a similar smokey picture from the first fire of my ST car. Amazing what a pickled engine will do after a few years.

I think we are all waiting for you to finish the following tasks...

clean up engine bay.
Clean up drive train
bolt-in drivetrain
connect drivetrain to car
turn key

Smile, jump and down, celebrate, etc... You get the idea.

You are much closer than you think.

This is exciting =) any suggestions on scraping off 1/2 inch of solidified gunk off the tranny? I am still brainstorming how to clean the motor and NOT get solvents/water etc in the motor once the carbs and exhaust are pulled off. I think I am going to make temp block off plates out of plastic and gasket seal the openings so I can scrub the motor with simple green & a tooth brush.
