Day 214 || The weeks progress
6Feb2012 Lots of good stuff happened this week/weekend. Engine tin is getting blasted and my fan+housing was kidnapped to get bead blasted. I got my transmission back after it ran through a car parts dishwasher and it gleams! (Big thanks to BR & Scooter!) https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-K...ansmission.png https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-5...-06-23_925.jpg Those are just mundane details....what I am really excited about is that I was able to scrub down the engine bay and pressure wash...all before the superbowl :D I took care to dry everything with my wet/dry vac and compressed air and then turned up the heat in the shop to dry overnight. Tonight I was able to prep and paint....assembly is close! https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-4...-51-40_657.jpg https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-P...4-22-47_13.jpg https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-s...-22-59_500.jpg https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-I...-23-22_977.jpg Hard to tell...but the bay is painted and ready to start the reassembly process as parts are cleaned and prepped! https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-l...-52-36_226.jpg https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-F...-52-56_324.jpg https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-d...-53-10_439.jpg |
Looking good, as usual!

I have to admit, when I saw you taking what appears to be a carpenter's hammer to the car in one of your first pictures, I thought "Oh geeze."
However all fears and doubts were quickly assuaged when you posted the following three images: 1. Your foil method for duplicating complex panels. 2. You too drink wine from a tall glass. 3. The totally sweet Hazet tool caddy. Prost! |
Bryan, I should have your fan/housing done today...ready for that clean motor. SmileWavy

Bryan,
Did Brandon run your Trans thru there new Kuda Parts washer for you? Those work sweet! Does half a days work in 15 Min. Nice progress for a Super Bowl weekend. Let me know if you need some cowl seals for your fenders?......Have a bunch of them in the bag. Keep at it. KT |

I am sure I need something... -e-brake boot -A struts to fit bilstein inserts That is all I can think of right now...I am tired...going to bed :D Oh, do you have the fender cowls? https://encrypted-tbn0.google.com/im...EB7P_wosZxvKtQ |
Bryan, I had not looked at this thread in a while and I just spotted the photos of your engine stand. Somebody may have already pointed this out in which case I apologise but I would SERIOUSLY recommend adding another leg with castors across the end where there is only one castor. I have the identical stand and one day with an engine on the stand (not Porsche), and me on the other side of the shop, the stand just keeled over! I noticed you braced the bottom which is a good idea but I would strongly suggest this additional modification. SmileWavy

Day 229 || There is NOT enough time in the day!
21Feb2012 Life keeps jumping up and yanking time away from the car BUT I think I can say NO MORE grinding! (for now ;) ) I finally ground out all the scale in the floorboard area and cleaned up the hideous (arc?) welds on the floorpan patch done many years ago. I welded up the rest of the holes and patched in sections where it was too far gone. The interior looked like this in October 2011.... https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-b...-52-01_101.jpg The sound deadening and the Shutze for the most part just lifted right off b/c of rust https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-2...-21-57_212.jpg https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-e...-56-26_408.jpg https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-N...-55-59_821.jpg ....finally 6 months later....this weekend I finally got around to stripping the rest of the Shutz https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-T...-36-37_314.jpg https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-X...-36-46_209.jpg https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-5...-38-14_383.jpg I have never been so happy to paint with a paintbrush! POR-15 over well prepped and degreased metal https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-p...-28-29_519.jpg I worked the POR-15 into all the crevices. Next step is seam seal, Shutze texture, then paint to lock it all down. Now the fun part! Parts are being delivered as we speak! |
Hey Bryan, Great Job !!!
I have 2 questions: How did you removed rust spots shown on pic or POR-15 should take care of this? I've followed John and he used Picklex20 Manufacturer Home Page Metal surface preparation, steel pre-treatment. Do you think it will work or POR-15 is better? Also, I do not see heat vents on your car in the rocker panels, did you close them? Thank you in advance, -Youri. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1329837241.jpg |
Bryan, make sure to use Scoth-Brite on the POR to add tooth before adding the Schutz.
POR says that you can paint right over rust on the spec sheet, but I prefer to add a step. I use dilute phosphoric acid to convert the rust to iron phospate first. You can find it (cheap) at the hardware store, usually sold as concrete etcher. Just make sure to read the contents and make sure there isn't any polymer sealant added in. |

Soooo, to answer your rust question. I ground/wire wheeled all the rust to remove the loose stuff. I then wiped everything down with PPG DX-330 to remove all grease and material from the surface....then you use a paint brush and a cup with your respirator on. Vents? The long wheelbase cars (LWB) changed to vents on the dash and eliminated the rocker panel vents. Quote:
