Very nice project! Inspiring.

Very interesting drive home tonight. (slow and steady...)
Out with the better half for my birthday dinner and when I leave the parking lot and pull onto the highway I have no headlights!
City lights are on, (H4's) but no beams.
I figure switch, relay, fuse, signal stalk but nothing. What the hell?

So, what are the odds of both H4 lamps failing at exactly the same time?????
Pretty good I guess, The 80/100 lamps had both burnt up and shattered in the housing.
Put the old ones I had kept on the shelf back in, and they work just fine.
I ordered another 2 sets, one for road emergencies!

Wow - was the CIS running that rich?

Not rich at all, set with a CO meter to around 3. 15 mpg combined city/highway driving was the best I could get.

Curious...what do you think your total cost was for the full conversion?

timmy2 06-12-2013 07:13 AM

The Bitz kit runs around $2200 new by the time you buy everything. Google Bitz racing.
All the other mods like SSI'S , Dansk, backdated heat, etc is another $2K with all new parts. Mine was less as I bought used for all. Probably saved about $1000.

Decided to go through my distributor today.
Thought there was a little too much vertical play and ordered new spacers, bushings etc. for it from Parts Klassic.

Not too dirty inside, but took a while to clean it all up. My dizzy doesn't have any advance or retard mechanism so that made it a little easier.

I took off the drive gear and pulled the shaft for cleaning the advance mechanism and bushing inspection.
No appreciable wear for sideways thrust and I was able to eliminate any free play with the shim kit. So I'll put the bushings away for the next 90,000 miles...

Here's some before, during and after pictures.(Sorry none with the shaft out)

Dirty:

Bench and parts, still dirty:

Clean: :)

On another note, Getting 18 mpg on last fill up city/highway combined. (3/4 city)
tuned up the map for the AFR and improved it by 2-3 mpg. :)
Still some more tuning to get it where I want it. Hard to justify the time though when it is so nice out and I just want to cruise with my wife or kid , not the laptop! :)

NeedSpace 07-15-2013 06:32 AM

Timmy2, besides fuel econ, have you noticed any other improvements in performance with the rebuilding of the distributor?

timmy2 07-15-2013 08:40 AM

Idle seems smoother, (just rebuilt it yesterday!)
Also noticed a bit smoother deceleration and seemed a lot quicker to hit 6500 rpm. :)

The mileage improvement was from tuning my AFR map for my EFI system.

I'll run it through a tank or 2 and see if there is anything else of note.

timmy2 07-30-2013 07:31 AM

Interesting note, just read an old road and track magazine with the specs on my model year and it stated the normal driving mileage as 18mpg!

I guess I'm right on with what I'm getting now.
It will be interesting to see what a long highway only trip will yield.

Haven't done much to my car lately other than enjoying it.
Here's a picture from the other day after a foggy morning drive to work! :)
What do you guys think of the badge and the back to original euro bumper pieces? I really like it.

The euro bumper bits are lost on your dark color car, Dennis. I think you should give them to me -- they'd look much better against my Chiffon. No need to ship, I can drive North and pick them up in person. It's OK, I'm happy to do it. No need to thank me!!

LOL, you'll have to wait until I'm done with them...

Funny thing is, they were given to me by a member here that sold me some other parts. (You know who you are) Really a great guy, ended up sending me the proper front signal housings with the running light socket in it for this style of lamp almost a year later as well. :D

You car is looking sharp. I really like those euro bumper pieces. Great work. I love the look of the 911 with little droplets of water on it.

"Have not done much but enjoy it...", nothing wrong with that!

Went for a nice ride with the wife this afternoon. Top off, tunes playing, sun shining, 55 degrees out, heater levers lifted just a little, it was great.

Car started up first crank, ran smoothly when cold up and down the many steep hills in the neighborhood, hit the highway and cruised to a nice park she had never seen and came back home.

I used to worry about how it would start and run with the CIS when cold, now I just jump in and drive. It makes all the work and time invested over the past 2 years worth it. :)

The only time a black car looks clean is when it has little water droplets on it. As soon as they dry up all you see is water stains and dust.....:D

Hey speak for yourself...my car looks dirty even before the rain. ;) But a 30 foot shot, then she looks nice...

I know exactly what you mean, and it is the main reason I'm converting to EFI this winter. Great to hear it's all working out for you.
