While i'm a proponent of EFI conversion I believe a well maintained CIS system is quite reliable. I have two now, and both snap to life with minimal cranking and work fine both cold and hot..

Right there with you, I spent so long having argue with her for 5 minutes at each start, now that she jumps right to life and each turn of the key I have to smile every time.

Love the Euro trim, where is the hard top?

[edit] remembered your EFI...so not RIGHT there with you, I seem to have conquered my CIS :D

I agree with that too. My issue is the parts I would need to make my CIS reliable cost close to what it would cost to convert to EFI. The fact that I would get improved performance with EFI pushes me more toward the EFI side.

If I had a trashed CIS system I agree 100%, though ITB's and controllers are not cheap, even if you do it all yourself!

Hard top is hanging in the garage waiting for the Oregon winter rain to start!

Who said ITB's .... In my dreams... (Someday) The Bitz kit works great for now...
I still have my complete CIS system ready to bolt back on if I feel like it. It was the hp improvement, mileage and tune ability of the EFI that I wanted. As I mentioned way earlier, I'm a tuner from way back and like to play with these types of things.
Heck, I had dual side draft webers on a '75 VW Rabbit with a race cam, headers and exhaust back in the '80's...
I was getting 125 HP from a 72 HP delivered 1500 cc motor in a 1600 pound car!
It was nuts....freaked a lot of muscle cars out when I blew them away!

I finally bought my dream car for my 16th birthday two years ago, my '78 was new that year!

Who said anything about ITB's? I have a Carrera intake I got for a song that is 100% complete. I plan to get a set of adapters to bolt it to my heads and wire it to a Megasquirt. That way my CIS is still complete if I ever go to sell the car in the future.

I'll know exactly what I have for troubleshooting in the future. And instead of replacing worn mechanical parts that are either NLA or limited availability (both instances equaling big money) I will be using OEM sensors from domestic cars. If I have a problem, I'll just stop by the local auto parts store and be back in business.

I agree with Timmy also, as an engineer, the idea of designing this system and then tuning it is a lot of fun.

Hi Timmy2 Great Thread, love what you got going on here with your car! I used to live in Ashland, OR. I am going to spend more time reading everything you have posted here, I will probably end up reading through it a couple of times tonight. I am digging the EFI conversion you did! Need to study this more.

Can't wait to get my car on the road! I am close to posting some vids here maybe tonight on my project. I am really curios to get your and Needspace's feedback once you see the videos.

Regards...

Well, the ITB dream is getting closer I guess...
I bought a bunch of parts to start building myself a set along with ignition...
What am I thinking!
Stay tuned. (well, not really, it is going to take a while...) :D

Sweet! Just do it in stages. EDIS, get it running good, then ITB's.

NeedSpace 11-19-2013 10:22 AM

Timmy2,

Just curious, did you ever create a stand to run your engine when outside the car?

No, My garage is too full nowadays to even entertain the idea.
Besides, I use my car to hold it while it is running! :)

So, would someone please help explain this sickness ("Relaxing Hobby") to me...
I'm sitting in my garage at my garage laptop, reading the forum, looking at my car and trying to figure out what I want to do next to the car...
I just changed the oil last weekend and took it for a nice long drive and everything is working really well.
I have all the parts to redo the front suspension, but it doesn't seem to need them. I have started collecting parts to go to TBI and EDIS but still need more parts to move in that direction.
Is it that I just can't leave well enough alone? Or something else?.... :)

tdskip 01-31-2014 04:04 PM

Ha, please swap "sickness" for "relaxing hobby" or the lot of us with a similar, er, hobby will feel bad about ourselves.

timmy2 04-23-2014 10:42 AM

Haven't really done much to the car lately besides driving it. :)

I recently re-installed the interior Targa Braces after covering them in heat shrink so the seatbelts don't scratch the aluminum and they are less obvious. (not so "blingy") They definitely do make a difference in the feel of the car when pushing it in corners.

Performed a few more "fine tuning" trips for the EFI, not many changes are occurring in the map with the Autotune feature in Tunerstudio, I must be pretty well dialed in.

Probably going to send my soft top out for rebuilding soon. it is starting to show some signs of old age... Good thing I have the hard top to use while is out being rebuilt.

Freshly covered Targa brace installed:

Looks pretty neat there Dennis. Are you using her much?

Arne2 04-23-2014 11:26 AM

I keep expecting to see you someday on the road around here, Dennis. But I guess I don't go North nearly as often as I thought...

I've been using it as my daily driver when it isn't raining too much. It isn't the car, it's the other drivers on the road that tend to keep the car parked on the real rainy days!
Maybe averaging 3-400 miles a month.

We'll meet up one day, I try to go at least once a month to Portland cars and coffee on Saturdays.
The rest of the time I usually head to the coast and around the hills north and west of Salem. I really love the twisty road(s) to Tillamook and other places after turning north off 22 at Grande Rhonde. :D
