Life, my friend, is good.

timmy2 04-27-2013 02:04 PM

Spent an hour this morning re-tuning my maps as it was running rich now that it's not getting extra unmetered air!
Definitely a huge improvement. :)
Cruised up to Portland for C&C after tuning and it runs great.
Just in time for some top off touring with the great weather we've been having.

On a side note, since repairing the rocker shafts, I sure don't use any oil, just 1/2 a quart in 1500 miles. Must have been leaking a quart every 800 or so before fixing it!

Dennis,

You have been busy! Deja-vu with the rocker shaft... I had the exact same experience. Glad you found it in time.

EFI kit looks awesome... I need to do the same I think.

Keep up the good work!!! It's is inspiring and educational.

Cheers

Dennis...how has the Bitz kit treated you? I have CIS on my 3.0 Carrera motor, and I'm considering it.

I'm really enjoying the Bitz kit as my first venture into EFI. The kit is fairly easy to install and tune if you read, read, read and follow the directions exactly.
Good support from the Bitz yahoo group with lots of information and files on their site. Also great support from the designer and seller Tony Bizantis.

The kit is a little outdated as it uses an older megasquirt version, but for it's application as a plug and play EFI solution it works well.

I actually like cruising and tuning with my laptop in the passenger seat. Playing with settings for performance vs mileage and getting a fine balance etc... The geek in me combined with the mechanic and driver, almost nirvana! :)

Some day I'll get it on a chassis dyno with a good tuner expert and really tune it in.

Hey Johnathan, I haven't seen your cars thread bumped up lately, must be running good.
The Bitz kit is out of Ottawa so almost local to you!
Yeah, that rocker event was a good catch, any more movement and I would be looking for engine parts or a new motor!

Burned a tank and a half in my car this week, sure is nice to put some miles on it.

Does it make sense to go with the Bitz if it's outdated? Is there a more current version somewhere?

Glad to hear you're enjoying it!

It depends on your ultimate goal for your car as to whether it makes sense. The controller can be upgraded as you see fit to do so if you want to add features for ignition etc.
As a stand alone unit it works great out of the box.
The owner of Bitz just posted yesterday in the CIS to EFI thread.

LOL, you'll never go back... ;)

Nice restoration project!

Thanks Tony,
And yeah, you're probably right... :)
I'll most likely just keep modding!

Hey man...are there plans to make the Bitz kit current, or is that left for the user?

timmy2 04-29-2013 06:07 PM

Up to the user, Tony supports his kit as is.
Lots of info out there on doing it,gsmith660 has done it all!

Mike the Bitz kit is excellent as a turn key starter that can be modded as your project grows I got the car running on the basic kit and then decided to add the turbo and EDIS so ms extra was needed so I flashed the new firmware and made a few mainboard mods that are all in the megamanual then I want to go E-85 gas so I just added a daughter board to Tony's original kit and now have MS 3 that supports dual VE table that you can switch without a computer datalogging and idle control valve among other stuff. The sky is the limit with a price reasonable kit.

gsmith660 05-02-2013 01:29 PM

Dennis I am far from doing it all, LOL but I have definitely proven just how versatile this kit is with the 3.2 manifold the turbo and EDIS and soon other things

HI Michael,

The BitzRacing CIS to EFI kit is well thought out and documented and will be a stress free start to EFI. From there later versions of the MegaSquirt piggy back on the hardware that comes with the kit, so you can make it as current as you like. How far you want to go, is left to the user.

My recommendation to people is to first convert to EFI, and then upgrade as your knowledge grows like Gerry did. Starting with a V3, EDIS, and a lot of controls from the start can become overwhelming and lead to giving up when things don't work.

Well, I'm really excited about it. I've been craving a new project! :)

Spent a good hour or so tuning and adjusting tonight with a different AFR map. (Thanks Tony) it is mapped a little leaner than what I was running in the lower rpms, but seems smoother after a good autotune.
If you like playing around with things trying to get them to work just right...
This system will meet the need, or you can just run it right out of the box! (Pretty much)

Haven't updated this thread in a while, Been busy building engine harnesses and I've just been driving and enjoying the car and the good weather.

I've put over 1500 miles on the car since putting the engine back in and I think I'm almost down a 1/2 of a quart of oil... :)

Installed some red dot Coco mats and a 930 wheel that I bought here on Pelican.
I think they both make the car look great.

Here's a crappy cell pic, but you get the idea.

Minor update after putting the engine back in and adding the EFI in January:

Added my first quart of oil today since the engine went back in, I went 1800 miles from 1/2 on the dipstick when warm and idling to just above the add mark. I'd say my new rings seated just fine on my alusils and I don't have any wear on the valve stems. Seems as though the Rocker shaft seals and proper torque has stopped the bleeding too! My garage floor doesn't look like an environmental disaster anymore either... :)

Switched to using regular gas, did a little adjusting of the AFR table and some Megasquirt tuning and my gas mileage is rising. I used to get about 250 miles to a tank of premium with my CIS. With my latest fill after the described adjusting, I'm currently at 220 miles and still above 1/4 tank.
My 8.5 to 1 compression ratio is fine with the regular fuel.
