+1. In fact, the stock tool is the only one I have found that will get all of the plugs out. The mechanic I use for major stuff showed me a cool Snap-On tool that he uses that basically operates on the same principle as the stock tool.

Buy a used stock tool. There really is NO reason to reinvent the wheel on this one... Nothing works better.

I picked up a used stock plug tool from a Pelican for a fair price about 15K miles ago. I used it for the first time last week. I'll never use anything else ever again. Worth every penny.

Just bought A snap-on extra long socket today thinging it might work good and it does on the #2 #3 #5 #4 cylinders but #1 and #6 cylinders it does not. So I will look for a factory tool. Hope this helps. Craig.

The early 6 and 7 series BMW's used to come with a nice tool kit that was built into the trunk lid. Tools were by Hazet and the spark plug tool was sort of like the 2505-2 (as posted by gecc). It has an internal spring steel that grips the spark plug insulator for plug lift.

Snap on magnetic socket, weld it to a 3 inch extension, use with a stubby ratchet. I have also used the Hazet one above which works fine.

Yes it does, but is the rubber sleeve inside replaceable? Part number or equivalent? Mines worn and doesn't grip as well anymore.

The main thing to look for in the tool is a thin-walled socket. Most spark plug sockets have thick walls, which prevent them from accessing the plug. The factory tool has thin walls, as did the Snap-On tool that my mechanic uses. The other important feature of the factory tool is the "swivel" function, which allows the tool to negotiate the confines of the cylinder head.

Timely thread.

I just had our machinist take off 0.020" off my Craftsmen 13/16" spark plug socket.

There is 0.050" of meat at the thinnest part, so you can machine 0.020" off and it clears every head. Cylinder #6 and #1 were my tightest.

Also, I took a round file and wore away at the rubber insert too, to make sure I can retrieve the socket with just the friction of the detent ball of the extension.
