Q about SC rally engine

Excuse my ignorance , this looks like an injector in a carbed engine (Rohrl's '81 rebuilt SC used in Targa Tas this year).

What?How?Why?

It looks like a Mechanical Fuel Injection engine to me. The pump is on the left hand side between the throttle bodies and the air filter housing. MFI seems to be the fuel delivery method preferred for factory race cars through the mid-80's. Certainly the 1984 SCRS still used MFI (Kugelfisher).

Yes, SCRS used Kugelfischer MFI, not Bosch like earlier MFI cars like 911S and 917.
