Replacing rear view mirror

I have a 1984 911 and it has the puck type connection on the rear view mirror. Any hints on how to get the old one out and replace it with the new mirror?

Maybe those aren't very good ideas. If you try 'em and need a new windshield, don't call me...

Isn't that the thing though. When you don't want those things to come off, they fall off. When you want them off, you can't get them off.

I just repaired a mirror on an 86 944 with the puck. The whole she-bang fell off.

The puck glues onto the window and the mirror slides over the puck from the top.

The puck looked like the one in the link.

To remove puck get a single edge razor blade and use a block of wood to "hammer" the razor under the puck.

I tried this on my 81 924 with original glass - but in addition had to use some heat from a hairdryer to soften the glue. I broadly heated the area around first then heart was in mouth as I heated the puck. But the method works...when angry thoughts , acetone and gentle persuasion doesn't!

Are you saying to take the puck that is glued to the windshield off or can you detach the mirror from the puck without taking it of the windshield and having to re-glue it?

The puck is glued to the windshield.
The mirror usually slides down over the puck from the top edge of the windshield. It is likely on pretty tight from the cummulative thermal cycles and vibration over the years. Some heat on the mirror stem could help then some gentle tapping with using a block of wood or plactic that will not scratch the glass. Patience will be required.

No need to remove puck if the mirror can slide off. Look closely and see if someone glued the mirror assy to the puck before tapping upwards.

I just added a new puck and rearview mirror (purchased from host) and sliding the mirror onto the puck did take some time and pressure. I used a rubber mallet and block of wood to get the mirror into position. The puck and mirror was a tight fit.

To remove the mirror I would use the same method.

Mine has a tiny threaded bolt , mind you it's not seated properly anymore and I will have to glue it in place. Does your mirror sport a small opening for a screw/bolt? As noted , the mirror should slide off the puck.

use a pin tool to help release the mirror base.
