Your oil is probably overfilled. Check it when it's at operating temp, on level ground. It's good to keep the level right between the min and max on the dipstick.

When they sit for years, a lot of the oil in the reservoir seeps into the engine and cylinders and eventually finds its way into the exhaust. When I first fired up my 911T engine after it had been sitting for 5 years it took 30 minutes of running to get it to quit smoking and spewing oil out the exhaust. Not a pretty sight. The important thing at this point is to heed the advice of the others about making sure you check the oil level with engine warm and running on level ground. You can't do much about all the oil that has already seeped into the exhaust except letting it burn off.

How much oil did you put in after you drained it? 9-10 quarts is enough.

Did you fill it until you could see the oil on the dipstick? If you did then it is over filled. The dipstick only shows the correct level if the engine is idling, parked level and the temperature is up to the first line on the gauge.

If you did all that then it is something else.

I wouldn't use a coat hanger, as you could possibly do some damage to the oil level sender if it gets hung up. I would just order a new dipstick from pelican.

Dip Stick..Me

Hi, First time I checked the oil in mine, I did the same thing but was able to gently fish it out with a bent piece of wire. Good Luck ! +1 on the overfill !

If wire and hanger does not work you may consider using a magnet fish tool if that doesn't work you may need to remove the Oil Level Sending Unit (OLSU) and fish it out there. Check under my name I have a tutorial on the OLSU.

As far as level, when hot (194 degrees minimum) and idling on level ground, the oil level should be in between the two marks.

the dipstick is made of metal thus a magnet will stick to it and assist in pulling it out

ummm . . . no . . .

magnets don't adhere to all metals, or even to all steels
