to chip or not to chip

I am looking to acquire a little more performance from my stock 3.2 , i am being told that its not a good idea to rechip due to the OEM rod bolts etc, etc, don't have the same temper as todays replacement parts. the the power plant is original with 76,000 org, miles on a 1984 911 carrera targa i welcome your input thanks, Rick

$50 you can play with this...I ran it for over a year...it seems to be a little more peppy - but I switched out back to stock while looking for another "issue" which turned out to be unrelated

Autothority 3.2 Chip - $60 obo shipped

Just drove an '87 3.2 with 130K on it "before" and "after" chip. Made a nice difference. The typical 3.2 throttle tip-in lag was gone and made a slight difference in overall acceleration after 4,000 rpm.

You won't hurt the motor.

The smart money on a Carrera: Cat bypass, sport muffler, and a Steve Wong chip. This is tried and true.

bought steve wong chip for my car, with some trepidation.
went to put new chip in, turns out it already has one in there, so it's already been chipped for god knows how long.. so clearly steve wong chips have no affect on the longevity of your engine!

put the new chip in anyway, fixed the stalling issue with the flywheel and alloy pressure plate haha

Steve Wong, or Loren, read up on both, and then decide.
I made my decision and went with Steve, no regrets!

I've had a modified chip in my car for over 300k miles, no problems yet but of course it's too early to tell. :-)

I have Mass Air flow (no barn door) - chip - SSI headers - M&K mufflers (in that order!) and my engine is a blast with this combination. Maybe the actual HP or torque is not radically different, but drivability and fun-factor is waaay improved.

As others have said, these engines really wake up with a little more timing advance.

I've found this chart very useful for my 3.2 mod planning:

It was borrowed from this thread.

good table.
Looks like a chip gets you ~15hp at 6k. That is probably a noticeable amount. Another way to look at this, does it really change your life? Are you now going to out run other cars you meet on the street? Does it turn the car into a 10HP to the ground per pound full up? I realize this is a wet blanket sort of post, but really where are you going with this? I trust SW 100% if the ~15HP is important to you, do it.

I really like that table! It is like a "chinese menu". Chose one from column A, one from column B.....

For dumb folks like me, this is good stuff.

I don't disagree with your logic but my reason for considering the SW chip is the reports of smoother acceleration...reducing "dead" spots.

"Actual reality"? You mean "bashing for the sake of selling a competing product?"

Installed the SW chip a few weeks ago. My butt dyno says there is a moderate amount of improvement, but it just might be because my butt is closer to the seat.
