Leather shift boot question
I had a shifter meltdown, a broken bushing (year old) died and I bent the tabs up and so on getting into gear, that's another story. Anyway I had the rubber boot under the leather boot. The rubber boot was chewed up where it was getting squished by the outer leather boot.
My question is, if you have the leather boot do you still use the rubber under it? Or did you just remove it?

the directions say to install the leather over the rubber, but i normally remove the rubber boot. just feels too thick and springy and clunky to me. whatever you do, be sure that nothing gets caught in the reverse lockout system.

John, that's exactly how it felt, now it feels "correct" without the rubber boot. And I believe that's exactly what happened, the rubber boot got mashed in the lockout, mid-drive.

+1 I believe the rubber boot is to keep debris or part of the leather catching on the gates.
On my 915 Trans there is a 24MM thin asjustment nut that can loosen or tighten the shift play. A wrench while back tightend so much that I was horrendous, I tought it was my leather/rubber boot binding but lossening the nut cured it.

Did a mid 80's 911 come with both the rubber boot and leather boot cover? I think it looks better with the rubber boot.

Yep, mine has the rubber under there and the leather over the top; works well, the rubber giving support to the leather boot. I do not understand the 'thick/springy/clunky' thing, unless one is shifting while holding the boot...................
![]() I don't understand how either the rubber or the leather could just 'get in the way', either, unless one or the other was obviously abused or simply falling apart for whatever reason, age, neglect, dog bite...... I also think the rubber alone looks perfectly awful (with console); leather is cool (so she said). ![]() |

Edit: This post was a response to Scott, of course.......
Yep, there we go, I just had to guess that something had happened to upset the original setup, you know? Hope the 'jesting' in the rest of my post was taken well...I have pretty good faith in Porsche design, definitely know that Mr. Walker is top notch, even have a reasonable amount of faith in rubber....oops! ![]() ![]() Last edited by nesslar; 11-28-2011 at 04:03 PM.. |

That's cool, definitely. Really! I have a feeling all our ancestors were pretty much neighbors way back when, friendly or otherwise; a little bit o' Welsh and Irish here, mostly Scandihoovian, however...just for fun:

My car is really not dirty, I just had to take the picture in the pitch dark sans the interior light. My workbench on the other hand is inexcusable. This is the leather boot sans the rubber interior boot, and the aftermath of the rubber boot jamming in the shifter.
