Thanks David,

If I can get my hands on a vent container for under the cowl for a resonable price I will plumb up the exact system for 69 and test it out.

Kristoph,

Just wanted to point out that Porsche didn't seem to make a clean break at model years on their part changes. If you have an early 69, you might not have gotten a canister (just a guess). As a couple of examples of this parts weirdness I see on my cars, my early 68 has a 67 roof mounted screw-in rearview mirror (when the 68s are notable for the one year only snap off roof mounted mirror) and my late 68 normal has the 69 'only' rear deck lid. I also have a '67 front panel without the washer fluid hole on the early 68 and a 69 right fender support panel on the late 68. I think Porsche used up their old inventory and then made the swap. It's also possible changes were made on my cars after the fact but it's oddly consistent. The early car has some 67 parts and the late car has some 69 parts.

I'm just wondering if your car came without the vent container in the first place. Not trying to persuade you in any direction.

you can use anything similar that will withstand gas vapors for the vent container under the cowl - no need to have the exact same thing

Thanks Von. I know that a lot of cars have parts from previous and future years. My car is #1826 which places it firmly in the middle of 69 911 Karmann production. So far I have not found anything on the car that is 68 or 70. I have however found the little metal clip that is supposed to hold the "rubber band" that holds the vent container. Also, the upper driver side body plug in the front panel has the hole in it that is supposed to carry the vent line. These two facts lead me to believe that the container was there originally.

In terms of getting the right fit I will try to get the original as it will be a plug and play type of thing. Fabricating one will be a pain and my time will be much better spent getting the car back on the road. Making one myself is the last option.

similar units were used in lots of cars, but a Wanted ad in the parts section will be easiest

I have had an ad up for several days and have already gotten two replies. Currently working on getting the price down;)

I just bought the correct factory vent tank!!!:)

Just in case anyone is interested: It takes 5 of the Eastwood thermocoustic lining kits (Five 1ft by 1ft squares in each) to do the floors and rear seats on a 911. The material is great to work with and I will post some pictures tomorrow. I unfortunately only bought two kits so I am on hold until the final three kits arrive.

Day 82: Floors, Doors, and Engine Grill Oh My!! Today I was able to make some fantastic progress towards getting the Rat back on the road. I was able to install the sound deadening material (Eastwood Thermocoustic) on the passenger side and in the two rear seats. I was also able to finish both doors and bend the engine grill rails back into shape.

Day 82 continued:

To redo the engine grill I removed all of the rails which luckily are numbered. I painted the screen underneath black and individually bent the rails back into the correct shape and reinstalled. Someone had pushed the car using the engine grill at some point and they were horribly bent. It did not come out perfect but good enough for a daily driver:)

Removing the rails. Notice how bent they were.

Painted screen installed on the car. I made sure to use 6 neoprene washers between the grill and the deck lid

Slowly installing the rails. It took about a total of 3 hours to bend and refit all of the rails

To get the rails to fit snuggly back in place I crimped the rails using pliers and a piece of vinyl for protection

Does anybody know where I can get a new one of these? I have looked around and have not been able to find the same plate. I have found some that are similar but they have all been slightly different

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1353949849.jpg

The one below is supposed to fit 66-83
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1353949911.jpg

I think this one might fit

The following one is for 65-67. I bought this one and it does not fit

kkinzli 11-26-2012 09:26 AM

Where can I get one of these?

kkinzli 11-27-2012 04:17 AM

Here is a picture of my problem with the paint plate from 65-67. As you can see the pictures plate is too small to fit the hole spacing. The reason I bought this plate was that it looked closer to the original than the other options I have found.

What have others done to replace the paint plate on 69 cars? Where can I get the correct plate?

wasserkuhl 11-27-2012 04:27 AM

perhaps try Early 911 : 1965 - 1989 Porsche 911 sales, repairs and restoration

nick moss will be able to get the correct one for you!

Day 83 Batteries Installed: Today I was able to address the dead battery situation. The batteries that came with the car were the Interstate U911 type and had been installed in 2006. This is the longest functioning battery I have every seen. It is such a shame that this battery is no longer manufactured:mad: To address the battery issue I took the two old batteries to the local Deka Dealer. Thanks to a very helpful warehouse manager I was able to find the following battery. The battery is a 570MF and has 540CCA. The previous U911 had 300CCA. This means that I will have 1080CCA instead of 600CCA for those cold winter mornings in Florida;)

Installing the batteries was a royal PITA. I had to use a framing hammer and a large pry bar to bash some of the dents out of the battery boxes. I was really scared that the hammer would fly out of my hand and land on the freshly painted fenders:eek: After I had bashed out all of the dents the batteries didn't fit:mad: To address the situation I thought to myself as any normal man in his garage would "maybe I can solve this dilemna with one of the awesome power tools I have laying around". After careful inspection of the batteries I was able to determine that the bottom of the batteries had a lip and ribs for structural intergrity that protruded about 1/4". Having had plenty of structural engineering classes and knowing that the batteries would be supported by the battery boxes I decided to remove the lip and ribs with my belt sander:eek:. I was able to sand the lip and ribs away with the battery on its side and I hope I did not damage it in any way. Once the lip and ribs were removed the batteries fit like the proverbial glove (correction - the proverbial glove that needs persuation with a piece of 2" by 4" and a framing hammer). Once I got the batteries into the boxes I connected them and put foam covers on the positive terminals to prevent accidental contact. Overall I am very happy how things turned out. The overall cost for both batteries was $140, which is much more palatable than some of the other options posted here on the "Bird".

What about having your own made with the process of "photo etching". There are many companies wo are doing it with rapid prototyping offerings. You will have to suppy the artwork. The process is flawless and allows raised text on recessed background.

Check these out:

the plates are under tight control IIRC

you might try a dealer and see - call Stoddard's - they are a "special" dealer for P AG

or... find a wrecked '69 and take the plate from that

Rotmilky 11-27-2012 05:02 PM

What about removing the overspray from the old plate? I think some careful application of acetone (fingernail polish remover) should take it off without affecting the original black too much. Any chance you still have the old plate?
