Replacing the 2.7 case w/ aluminum
I took my car to the wrench to get an assessment of what needed to be done to the engine as a part of an entire "non purist" restoration of the car. The best way to say what I want is that I am pursuing a brand new 1974 911 Carrera Targa that has all the 2.7 liter problems solved.
He suggested the use of an earlier 911 aluminium case. He has done this several times to bulletproof a 2.7 liter. He said it takes some machining but is otherwise pretty simple. I asked about re-using the magnesium case and he said that I would only be delaying the ineveditable, as I was suggesting re-installing a 28 year old case that had the cards stacked against it in 1974. The car currently has webbers and he also suggested going back to CIS. What does everyone think? Would the aluminium case solve the problem once and for all. Would it hurt the re-sale of this car to a purist? Any suggestions on fixing the magnisium case?

Frankly, resale value to a purist shouldn't be a heavy concern in a '74 model. For quite some time I've wondered why there aren't more '74-'77 "hot rodded" 911's out there. Slightly more weight than a pre '74, but the basic building material would cost a lot less. Aluminum case would be a good option, but you might also think of just buying a larger displacement later engine from a wrecked-em yard.

IMO by the time you machine & rebuild an earlier engine into a 2.7, you can find a nice 3.0 or 3.2. If you want to maintain a 'resale value' for some future purist, wrap up & store the correct# existing 2.7 for the purist to deal with.
I vote for keeping the webers.

Seems to me that a 3 or 3.2 would be a better option

A US spec 2.7 Carrera, whilst not as sort after as the Euro one, is quite rare, nonetheless. However, I think it would be fair to say (and I am a Middle Year car fan) that mostly people aren't to dear about the 2.7, particularly in US spec - I know the US spec Carrera engine is the equivalent to the ROW 911S too.
Therefore, upgrading simply to a 3.0 SC engine with CIS makes sense - and making it rather like the ROW 3.0 litre Carrera, in fact. Given what you would spend getting the 2.7 to spec you could easily get a 3 litre engine, and get a few more BHP thrown in too. I think this would be an asset to the car and wouldn't devalue it at all because of the reassurance of the SC engine - check those headstuds aren't snapped, though! |
