Pretty Sure I Needed New Bushings - Wow, what a difference.
My car has had issues with always riding bumpy and not tracking well at high speeds. I always felt like I had to grab the steering wheel tight to avoid swerving. The recent windy conditions were terrible and the car felt like a VW Bus. To compound things, the car has Koni Yellows which I think were too stiff for the stock torsion bars.
Yesterday, I replaced the tortion bars with 22mm bars and new front bushings. It's not the same car. I drove around last night and I couldn't beleve the difference. All of the bouncy, jaring ride has transformed to a smooth and stable feeling. Looking at the old bushings says a lot: In the photo, it looks like the inner tube is cracked but that is just greese. Just took a 200+ mile tour after doing my front bushings,ball joints,tie rod ends, and wheel bearings over the winter. What a difference is right. Like a whole different car.

I made the decision to change bushings after driving my friend's '71S and I figured Porsche would not have downgraded with the newer cars.
My primary issue was the bouncyness. But when I removed the front torsion brackets, you could easily tell that they weren't moving much and were probably binding. Add a stiff set of shocks to that and it was awlful. When I first added Koni's to my 944, the ride got harsh. Then I upgraded to stiffer springs and the ride smoothed out. I figured this might be the same issue with the 911 and it appears this was the case. The shocks were too strong for the stock torsion bars which made it harsh. I'm going to have to tackle the rears next. |
