re: '87 Carrera
I've been taking my (black) car to a few body shops for estimates on fixing some poor touch-up spots and a rust bubble. The rust has not broken through the paint and it's just left of the rear windshield, about where it begins to curve down. It's about the size of a quarter. I'm getting a different story from everyone I've taken it to or called -- repaint the whole car, you need a full restoration, we can do it for $600, we can do it for $2000, blah, blah, blah. Now my question: If the bubble spot has not broken the paint yet, can it spread or is it likely to spread -- or to have already spread underneath? Can I wait a while and just get the whole thing repainted? I don't want to throw a bunch of money into touch-up work, just to need it repainted a year or two from now. Pleasee advise. Thanks. |

You can definitely wait on that. You're right, do it all at the same time. You're going to pay through the nose to have someone do it for you so it's best probably if you decide when you're going to have it painted, and to the repair yourself. Get all of that rust out of there and coat it. Warren and the other guys ought to know the details on that. Of course, you won't know for sure until you sand the paint off and look at it, but surely you can do the rust repair yourself and have the whole thing sprayed.

Richard, maybe you've posted details on this rust before but I'm just wondering how an 87 Carrera rusted in this spot? Any damage history or previous repaint? Something caused the paint integrity to be compromised, if it's something just in that one spot I think I'd go after it and stop it while it's limited to that area. If the rest of the car is dry you might get away with just spot repairs. To me, the dividing line would be if this is the original paint, I think I would try to repair rather than repaint. If it's been painted before I would be more inclined to repaint, strip it down and find any more rust spots and repair them.

Hello
Thats one from the normal rust corners on all 911. If you have rust on that spot you should check the complete car for the other rust prone corners ( lower B pillar, Headlightbucket ). The Porscheare zinc coatet but one fine day the zink is gone and normal rust will come up. The windowframe is critical as it is always wet under the frame and the aged rubberchannel soakes up the water inside to the flange. Grüsse |
