Wow, Mobil 1 Racing with proper ZDDP but at $16 per qt??

So Mobil has finally figured out that there's a market for it's Mobil 1 oil with the correct ZDDP levels and has introduced Mobil 1 Racing 0W-50. But $98 for 6 quarts? Are they serious?

I know I'm insane for wading into the oil debate but I thought the ZDDP levels in this table were acceptable. I've run 5W-40 in cooler weather and 15W-50 in warmer, with zinc levels of 1200 and 1300 PPM; respectively (1982 930).

Based on the MDS from Exxon, the ZDDP is greater than 2500ppm and a big dose of Moly too.

Sounds like overkill for the street. Anything around 1200ppm ZDDP is fine unless you are using very strong valve springs with high loading.

A good HDEO works well, at a fraction of the cost.

Yes, I'm sure they're serious (and realistic as well) because this stuff was formulated and intended for racing...period (did you notice the 500 degree temps!). It will likely be sold in small volumes like race gas. Not good for street, and would possibly be borderline harmful used in a daily driver. Concerning ZDDP and high viscosity, the message is slowly coming across that "more" is not always better - it has to be right for the application. I think many of us make the understandable mistake of thinking that if something works well for the racers it will provide extra protection for me because I "drive hard" or live in a hot climate, but the reality is that real racing is a whole 'nother universe for a motor.

I pay $14.25/liter for regular Mobil 1 5-50 down here..... I used to pay $16/liter of Castrol RS 10-60 that my old BMW M Coupe used to drink. Point is, people will pay the price if it is what they need for their vehicle.

You don't want to use that stuff unless you are willing to change it after every race. Ultra-high ZDDP oils should never be left in the engine due to the detergent package being mostly used up and cannot prevent ring deposits from the additive package.

Its an excellent product, but truly a racing oil. There are other like products that can be used for longer periods of time such as Motul 300V.

I use the V-twin 20W50, 1700 zinc and 1600 phos. It's about $10/ quart and I can get it at Autozone

I just bought a case of Kendall GT-1 with ZDDP for $54.00 shipped from Amazon. I usually use Valvoline 20/50 Racing VR-1, but this stuff looks like the real deal too.
