need help finding source of oil leak
I have a substantial oil leak around main crank shaft pulley.
my car is a 1975 911s, with a 2.7 engine with 113k miles the leak is getting the fan/shroud wet (when engine is running)and dripping down the shroud and dripping on the crank shaft behind the fan pulley. the problem just showed up a couple of days ago. It seems to have started when i had the car idling with the deck lid open in the drive way when a gust of wind blew a plastic bag into the fan belt I stopped the engine and removed all the visible signs of the plastic and put the car back in the garage the next day i started it up and let it idle again, when i noticed a pool of oil forming on the garage floor i turned it off and removed the fan belt and found a wad of plastic wrapped around the alternator shaft. is it possible that the wad of plastic put pressure on the belt and thus the crank shaft pulley which in turn ruined the main crank shaft oil seal? If so how can i fix it . i removed fan/shroud/alternator and can't find source of leak. I want to run engine with out fan/alternator for about 90 seconds to find leak can i do this with out causing more damage any ideas will be appreciated http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploads20/porsche11340679260.jpg[/img] |

I do not think that running it without the fan and alternator will provide any advantage for detecting a leak. It might be better to use a mirror and a light to peek behind the pulley. If the leak is coming from the top side of the engine it is usually from an overfill.

I think I would stop by the local auto parts store and pick up some spray degreaser and shoot the area around the crank seal to clean off any oil. Start the engine and then with a good bright flashlight look for oil coming from the crank seal. Look to see if the oil comes from the inner seal against the crankshaft itself or from around the outside edge of the seal where it mates up with the #8 nose bearing. The seal is a pretty easy fix if you're at all handy with tools.
You'll need to pull the crank pulley and the rear support of the engine. Once those are out of the way the seal comes out and goes in without much fuss.

You can run it for a short time without the fan in place be very careful with the alternator wires. Make sure you tape them up so as not to short out.
