Valve Spring Compression Tools Question
I'm doing as minor a rebuild as possible, I have great compression & leakdown so I hadn't planned on fully dissasembling the heads or the P&Cs. I have a questionable broken valve spring somewhere (although I've not been able to confirm/see it yet).
So I have my engine out and undressed, I've got Wayne's book, going step by step. I've got the chain covers off, camshaft nuts loose (but not removed yet). Valve covers open. I want to take each of my valve springs off and replace them if they check out. Question is I bought the intake & exhaust valve spring tools from our host. Is there a way to use them with the head off the motor or do I need to use my compressor, take the rockers off and use them before I go farther. I started tonight working on the rocker for #5 where I believe if there's a broken spring that's where it will be but getting the rocker off has been interesting (no idea how I've seen threads of doing this w/ the motor in the car). I do have the screw and nut off but not gotten the shaft yet.

I haven't used those tools myself but, If they are the intake and exhaust spring compressors that bolt to the head then I believe you will need compressed air to hold the valve in place.
Heads off, I'd use a motorcycle/Import car valve compressor tool like the one I bought from E-Bay for my son's Toyota head. For the rocker shaft make sure the rocker is not in tension, leave the screw and cap in place loose and gently tap the shaft out using the allen key for a little and then a plastic screwdriver handle or similar as Wayne's book mentions. Worked for me.

Interesting but I'm loss.......
Could you post a picture of the intake/exhaust valve tool you have? It is difficult to visualize something with all the valve tools available in the market today. Thanks.

Timmy is correct, I bought the p7i and p7e tools from the link he posted. I think they need to add to the product description and indicate these can only be used with the engine closed up.
I think I'll hang on to them in case I need them in the future and check with my FLAPS to see if they have a regular clamp version in their rental/loaner program. sent from my Galaxy S III
