Stupid question ...Hood or Trunk?
I just did a google image search for Porsche 911 hood and trunk, both results showed the luggage compartment. My stupid question is this... is the front the trunk and back the hood or vice versa?

Try 'rear decklid' or some variant...

If you think of it as a normal car then yes the front is trunk and back is hood
Why does it matter? You could use probably fifty different names for either

It doesn't really matter, just wondering what the proper terminology is. And I definitely don't think of it as a normal car!

My wife seems to be partial to the term Frunk (front + trunk) for the luggage compartment. -J

Pelicans from the UK probably regard the hood as being a cabrio top, the luggage comparment as the boot, and quite possibly the rear lid as a bonnet. Porsche calls the fenders wings, rear quarterpanels a sidesection, the luggage compartment thing (our hood) the front lid, and engine compartment the rear lid. Seems confusing, eh?

Hahaha.....I even had some people asking as to what happened to the engine to which I usually reply that 'it is one of them new electric vehicles'.........
It's just a 'frunk'....

Um.. to me a trunk is the storage area.. shouldn't matter if in the front or back. To me, the front is the trunk.
On a 911, I prefer decklid to "hood"... usually because folks think a "hood" goes in the front ![]()

I am partial to the "frunk" term and the rear deck lid phrase. I was thinking about this recently, I have a '31 Ford model A which has a "luggage rack" this was sold with a matching trunk that could be strapped to it. So that is where the term "trunk" comes from. It is really a luggage compartment or trunk compartment. it was typically in the rear as early cars were predominately front engine. The classic "rumble seat" could also be used to store luggage, a kind of early rear trunk if you must. Call the front of your 911 a trunk if you like, some times its good fun to pick up a friend who does not know much about Porsche's to say drive them to the air port. You tell them to put there bag in the trunk and they walk to the back of the car. You pop the deck lid and say "oh no who put an engine in my trunk, I don't think there will be room for your suitcase".
Regards Dave

I call the front the trunk and the rear just the deck lid. But do say the trunk is under the hood.
![]() I jump started a Prius once, and when I lifted the hood the guy said "Whoa, that just happened". I said "What happened", he said "You don't have an engine, but I saw you drive up". LOL It's Boulder so I'm pretty sure he was stoned. Hahaha Cheers, - Craig_D

One of the things I like about this board, aside from the obvious technical help from folks who've earlier tread the same path we're on, is that everyone on here seems to have the same arcane sense of humor.

To quote the wisdom of Alfred E. Neuman...or whoever ..."what , me worry !
luggage area, hood, engine compartment, front trunk, whale tail, Lid, deck lid....It all works as long as WE know from whence we speak :=)

I think of a hood as a piece of sheet metal and a trunk as a storage compartment. Both of those are in front. The decklid is the rear piece of sheet metal and the engine compartment is in the back, too.

The best was when I took my P-Car to get an emissions test a couple of years ago and the tech opened the frunk and had a complete look of surprise... Finally the manager or head troll or whatever came out and pointed at the rear of the car and shook his head.... I must have been the first 911 that guy had seen...

Ok, so just to clear up the confusion... Do we now refer to the early cars as longtrunks or longfrunks? Or perhaps a longbonnet?
(Actually the last one makes sense to my South African tongue....mmmm) |

It should be noted that ROW cars probably have a boot, whereas the US cars have a trunk!
On a serious note, I think Jack has pretty much nailed it.

Hood or trunk
The trunk is the compartment in the front of the car. The hood is the panel that covers it. The engine cover is the panel over the engine compartment. At least that is the way my fuzzy brain perceives things!
