Oil line leak, not sure which to replace

I have oil leaking where the flexible line meets the hard lines that goes to the engine block. Since the two lines are fitted together I'm not sure which to replace. Should I just replace both? The line the arrow points directly to in the image is a 100% hard line that goes to the underside of the engine. It looks like i would need to remove the drivers side heat exchanger to do this and I don't want to do that unless completely necessary.

Best to crack the line open, clean and re-install....clean lines help with finding leaks.

Thanks joe. If I let the car sit with all oil in the block and oil tank I'm thinking I can open this line open without draining the oil. Am I crazy or can I do this?

Depending on the line yes....you could always have a nitrile glove handy with a zip tie handy......

The hard line runs into the bottom of your block, If the block is full, I'd bet that line will be full too.

This is likely your problem........



(The hose above has been re-hosed by some local hose shop and not done properly. You can see the crimps are too long and have crushed the hose at the bump. The factory crimps are much shorter to allow for this bump. You can see the hose is wet at each crimp.)

It is the hose assy from the engine cross pipe forward to the oil thermostat console. It is PN 911 107 743 10 and is available from our host.

Best to clean everything thoroughly and run the motor while observing where the leak comes from. This hose so close to the hot exhaust that over time it is the first to dry out & harden & fail. At your next oil change, disconnect this fitting and I bet you will find it loose at the crimp sleeve.

Here are a couple examples of what the correct crimps should look like. The fittings have a bump at the end meant to retain the hose.............



When properly crimped, the hose is not crushed at the bump and will not fail prematurely..............

I have the same issue. Do you just have to go to a hose shop to get the lengths of hose installed? Mine is leaking at the same point and I'm not sure if it's best to replace the entire flexible hose that goes to the cooler or if there is another option.

You can buy the complete metal/rubber hose new, or you can have Zims redo the rubber part, they have the right hose and crimper.

The original poster asks about the metal / hose fitting. There are two hoses in that picture, one runs from the oil pump scavenge side to the other side of the engine, connects up to another hose running all the way to the external thermostat under the fender.

The all metal hose almost never leaks. The one it attaches to almost always leaks after a few years. The good news is our host carries a full easy replacement for less than $100. This actually has gotten cheaper over the years and that is a rarity for all things Porsche.

Save yourself the trouble of recrimping, and just buy a replacement hose from Pelican. Get a 36mm wrench, and a 30mm counter hold wrench and get at them.
