Oil tank breather hoses delete

In an effort to clean up my engine compartment, I see that the huge oil tank breather hoses are quite unsightly. Mine are not even hooked up anyways.

Was thinking of deleting. What has been the standard fare for deleting these? K&N breathers? I know I've seen racecars with nothing running by the shock towers in the back but don't remember what threads to search and look.

I also need the room for the Ford EDIS coils and ignition module to complete my MegaSquirt install.

Since I can't remove the Motronic looms without major surgery (and I'm a purist), the looms will have to line the back of the shock towers too making for more clutter. Trying to eliminate as much as I can.

TIA

There is a very nice Oil Catch Can offered by Summit Racing that might help to clean up the space for you. If I can find a photo I will post it.

Also, a simple Aluminum angle bracket works well for mounting the EDIS Coils and the Ign module can go where the CDI was mounted.........

Hope this helps.

How is the noise having the coils close to the VR?

I used a Morroso catch can that I then relocated the filter element from the top and added tubing to vent it outside the engine compartment by the transmission. Enough blow-by gasses get through that it would get sucked into the heater and stink up the car.

I bought a breather tank from Saikou Michi. You can just give them the positioning and sizes of all the inlets and outlets. I had them put a 1" hose barb on it to match the oil tank. I then bought a K&N filter to go on the top and a Fumoto valve to go on the bottom for easy draining. I hooked up the breather to the oil tank using the formed hose that is normally used for the same task on a CIS.

Mine is a JAZ tank, with a stock CIS breather hose. I made the bracket to clamp around the upper shock mount.

It's bigger than I would like, but I do like the translucence, that lets you see the contents.

The 25 mm breather hose from the crankcase breather to the oil tank must be in place and unrestricted.
It needs to go up from the engine and then back down to the oil tank or a constant slope up to the oil tank.
It cannot have a ‘low-point’ where oil and condensation can collect in the hose.

The vent hose from the oil tank to the engine air intake vents moisture and blow-by into the engine intake.
Most racers vent this into a ‘catch can’ (with drain) and to the atmosphere.
With a proper running engine, there is very little to vent.
There is no downside to venting into the air filter assembly.

If you overfill the oil, the excess will come out of the vent hose. A mess no matter where it goes.

Joe Frantz’ is best of the above.
I would choose a larger tank, just in case.
Note the nice stock 25 mm breather hose from the crankcase breather to the oil tank.

Best,
Grady

Moroso catch tank with drain fitting extended though engine tin, so you can drain from underneath the engine compartment
Engine breather cover modified and threaded for AN12 fitting
AN12 bung welded to oil filler tube

+1, but the translucent tank provides some fair warning.

BTW, Fumoto also makes a drain valve that provides for an attached tube for draining catch-can contents.

Good examples of clean installations. Nice work.

Using -12 is somewhat of a choke on the breather. -12 is ~0.61" ID which is much smaller than the factory breather 25mm size. I see no reason to choke it down. -16 would be close to the factory size @ 0.84" ID

Of course i'm biased because i've been blessed with the biggest AN fitting i've ever seen on a 911 engine.

I have to ask, for a race car is this a nice "upgrade"? It seems like this is a fairly straight forward install. Thanks for the help.

I don't have a better picture. I just went straight up off the oil filler neck, with a little piece of angled hose.
I put a vent filter on that hose and any oil that goes up just drains back into the tank.
Seems to work pretty good.

You might check with your local race regs. Most require a catch-can system to avoid oil burps from engine to track.

The nice, original breather hose is available from our host: 000-043-205-16-M136 for $22.

The 'right' part.

Best,
Grady

Breather hose connections

Does it matter which opening is used from the oil tank to the crankcase? I have a 914/6 conversion car and I have the breather opening from the "oil tank filler neck" routing to the "crankcase" and the opening from the "top of the OEM oil tank" routing to the engine intake rainshield connectors.
