Another ST-build - this time from Denmark
Some information about the car: It is a 1972 911 2.4S. When I bought it in 2008 it looket like this:
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1356946395.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1356946420.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1356946489.jpg The original engine was gone. The previous owner had bought a new 3.0 liter Carrera case and used some of the parts from the 2.4 liter to make an engine. It was not running very well, so I had it taken apart. I decided to make a good, solid street/track engine, that looks like this now: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1360522633.jpg It produces around 260 hp at the flywheel at the moment and it is great fun on the track. I also got the gear box rebuilt with a limitid diff. Pictures from the track: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1356946606.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1356946614.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1356897498.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1356946744.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1356946757.jpg I bought the car in Sweden in 2008. Some Swedes had made it into a G-model at some point. Here is a picture from their build. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1356946906.jpg My plan is to turn it into an F-model again. But with a twist - a 1972 ST. Pictures of the build coming soon! /Christian |
I'm looking forward to it. I hope it will stay yellow.
|
Sounds like a fun project.
Nice to see another Dane on board. :) |
Yes: YELLOW!!!!!!
BEST! Doyle |
It's a pity that the original engine is gone, would be a neat to see an original 2.4S so close to my location :)
In case you're interested, I have a 2.4S engine with 2.2S pistons, ported MFI heads etc that I won't use, though it does not have original S case anymore. Good luck with the project! |
Hi Crhistian,
Great numbers on the engine. Looking forward to follow your build. Located just a little north of you:-) |
Thanks for the replies!
The car will be yellow again. From its birth it was light yellow - "Hell Gelb" The Swedes made it a darker yellow, that I really liked, but I am going for the original color when it gets to the painter. The engine is made withe these specs: 930/Carrera engine block 95 mm cylinders JE pistons 10.5 comp. Adjusted to 10.2 Carillo rods 3.0 Euro Carrera/2.4/2.7 crank Carrera 3.2 heads with new valves and guides. The heads were fitted with a special flange and drilled to accept the MFI injectors. GE 60 cams MFI setup with throttle boddies and stacks from a 2.2 S KN aircleaners Dansk Stainless steel heat exchangers Stainless steel 2 in 1 out muffler. I can recomend EBS Racing for parts! http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1360684760.jpg In this trim it made 260 hp on the dyno. I have now replaced the heat exchangers with a set of 40 mm headers. I am also going for a pair of 42 mm throttle bodies, as the ones from the 2.2 are way too small for the Carrera 3.2 heads. That should add a bit of HP... /Christian |
Some pictures of the the process of building the rear:
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1356944131.jpg Unfortunately I don't have pictures of doing the rear fenders. The car had Carrera fender flares on it. The were not even and the previous welding was not very good! My body repair guy is really old school and very thorough. I got hold of a pair of reproduced ST steel flares that were welded on when the Carrera flares were cut of: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1329497557.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1329497616.jpg Test fitting the rear bumper and engine lid. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1356944187.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1356903524.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1356903583.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1356944194.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1356943688.jpg Yes that is 9x15 Fuchs. Probably from the front of an RSR. Never restored. I was lucky to find them a few years ago: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1360512619.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1360512624.jpg More pictures coming! |
almost to pretty to change- who ever did teh first body change did well from the pics-

Look really good.
Who is doing the body work? |
steel ST flares, original 9x15 fuchs, light yellow? Sounds like the recipe for a beautiful machine.
|

A great guy called Kaj. He is a retired coach builder/body repair man. That would be the guy racing this thing: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1360648346.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1360648353.jpg |
This is so cool! Good luck with the build! I have been browsing through for some st-flares for my car as well...

I know the guy (Marek) that I got my flares from, has plenty more in stock. You can PM me for contact info if needed. /Christian |
Looking forward to the build, hope you can post a lot of the welding work, like rear quarter bumper sheetmetal. you have a rare 68.5-69 decklid.
|
Quote:
What identifies it as a 68.5-69 decklid? And how rare is that? /Christian |
Thank you, I'm considering going ST on my 73 at some point.
late 68 and 69 used a "3-bar grill." One in the center and 1 at each end. In 70, Porsche added 2 more bars since the grills so easily deform. These decklids therefor only have a center tab whereas 70-on grills have 3 tabs top and bottom. The decklid is fairly rare. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1360671145.jpg |

The car looks great :-)
I am also planning a ST project, where did you get the flares from and is the rear bumper ST or RSR? |
Quote:
I got the steel flares from a danish guy called Marek. He had them reproduced and they are exellent quality. He can be reached at: early911parts@gmail.com I got the rear bumper in Germany from a guy who has ST-parts. A little wider than RS - a little narrower than RSR /Christian |
Hey DD,
Great project. Those flares are awesome. Do post lots of picks for us. Cheers... |
Pictures from taking the front apart:
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1329497733.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1356944002.jpg The great guy (Kaj) inspecting the inside of the trunk ;) http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1356903288.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1356903184.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1360943071.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1360943089.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1360943307.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1360943452.jpg |
The car looket really nice in 2008 when I bought it, but over the four years of driving it, some signs of problems showed up:
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1356944025.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1356945433.jpg We decided to attend it all during the build. These pictures are from the right side http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1356903713.jpg Both the inner and outer rocker panels need to be replaced and also where the door closes http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1361374124.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1356945760.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1356945811.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1356903878.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1357382040.jpg |

just watch out for the brown recluse! |
While waiting on the body work, I collected a new exhaust system. The old one was from DANSK and a bit too small, so I took it off, cleaned it and sold it:
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1357496333.jpg Before and after initial cleaning. What a difference! (And part of my patient girlfriend...) http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1359221567.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1359221575.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1359221578.jpg After a lot of elbow grease and a lot of Autosol: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1359309503.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1359309519.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1359309526.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1359309567.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1359309579.jpg The old mufler got cleaned up too: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1359309738.jpg |
Time to focus on the new system. I got a pair of headers from EBS, that I painted black with heat resistant paint:
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1359221248.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1359221364.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1359221417.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1359221426.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1359221433.jpg Looks nice on the engine! And the fit was perfect. I am runing Carrera 3.2 heads on my 3.0 Carerra engine and the ports and the header was a perfect match! |
The new exhaust is from DANSK in ST-style. It was grey when I got it, but I wanted it to be black...
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1364034617.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1364034605.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1364034637.jpg I found some perfect clamps for the pipes that I also painted black: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1364034951.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1364035159.jpg I am a little concerned about how much noise this system makes?! http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1364035576.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1364035389.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1364035368.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1364035402.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1364035409.jpg |
More work on the front of the car.
The ugly ducklings where the battery cases had been and the previous owner had made a mess are gone and nice new (original thickness) plate is fitted instead: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1360512137.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1360512157.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1360512180.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1360512189.jpg The front pad cleaned up nicely and we decided not to replace it: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1360512202.jpg Test fitting the closing plate: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1360512504.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1360512560.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1360512595.jpg |

Hey Christian, great work! I want to point out though that the sides of front bulk head should be on the inside of the lateral supports instead of wrapped around the outside of those like you show. It might affect the fit of the fenders and hood as you would have made the front of the car narrower than it should be.
|
Great looking build! I just noticed that you appear to have no rain gutters! That was some effort by the previous owner.
|
Quote:
That is true. The previous owner took them off in the attempt to make a Yellow Bird. And I hate it! Either I am having them reaplied in some way or I am having the entire roof replaced... Gotte have rain gutters for my car. /Christian |
Hey Christian, thanks! I'm still working through some final details before a shake down test, but at least I'm in good shape right at the beginning of the season. :)
So, you think you'll reapply the rain gutters. Wow, that seems daunting. Are you considering a lightweight roof insert and full cage? |
Quote:
My body work guy is considering either to remanufacture rain gutters and weld them on the existing roof, or to replace the whole roof with one that has rain gutters. I want the original look back! I will go for a full cage at some point :) |
