Hi Jim... They really do look good! - I ( and others I'm sure) would like to see those big boots of yours from the rear. When it's day light, how about a photo from the centre rear?.

Here you go with 245's in the rear:

LOL! Yeah got to take it down a bit in the back and bring it up in the front. Hopefully the weather will cooperate this weekend, since winter still hanging around here.

Porwolf, I think you might have invented a new word "Fuchses" LOL!

I did a double take when I saw the 315R in the background!

I have a couple of GasGas's...

In a perfect world I would have been able to "test and tune" tire sizes by trial and error. But, instead I enlisted the help of my forum friends and based my online purchases by virtual means, a risk I take sole responsibility for. I'm really happy with the wheels and especially the tires, they stick! Just a few pointers...
It's hard to see in photos but the sidewall stance of the front and rear are a little different. The rear sidewalls have that "stretched" look that I like while the fronts are normal. Here are some comparison pics of old/new but look at the rim lip/sidewall difference between the new tires, on the left.

Of course, the way to remedy this would be to get 8" rims in the front or 255s in the rear but it's not that big of a problem for me to change it. I can't remember off hand if 8" rims came with the 23.3 offset but that would be my preferred way to go. I also think I've maxed out the aspect ratio on the front. 205/45 would have been better. I have plenty of clearance though, so all is good. Here are some more comparison pics.

Well balanced wheels, only 1oz. of weight.

I'll leave it at that. I can't wait to slam some corners with this set up. Off to the alignment shop!

OK Jonny, keep the wood down, it's just an old trials bike. Hee hee

I just returned from my first "spirited" drive with the new wheels/tires after alignment and corner balancing. The car feels GREAT, huge input improvement and way better front to rear, side to side balance. Slight shimmy over 70 in the front but seemed to disappear after 100, and never return.

I did manage to rub the outer sidewall of my left front pretty hard under extreme braking and will have to roll the fender. I'll be searching this forum directly to do that correctly but if anyone has a link I would appreciate it.

I will also be selling my (brand new +40 miles)245/40s and buying 255/40s to even out the difference between front and rear.

I'm getting VERY close to the perfect set up. Good old trial and error!

DRACO A5OG 03-24-2013 11:53 AM

try an aluminum bat, that is what used but you must use heat to soft then paint and do a little at a time from 11-1 o clock. :-)

911SauCy 03-24-2013 01:42 PM

^how does that method work?

Do you jam the bat between the fender and tire, or use it and some good ole muscle w the wheel off?

Jonny042 03-24-2013 03:32 PM

The pictures you posted of the "stretch" of the 205/50 vs the 245/40 rears were really interesting - and led me to check the tire specs at the tire rack. It seems the 205/50 is unusually wide given it's rated size. In fact the 215/45 actually has the exact same section width as the 205/50, even thought the mounted rim width for the measurement is actually narrower.

So what I am saying id if you are getting rub in the front maybe going to a 215/45 in the front will reduce the bulge from the wheel and also reduce the diameter a bit. Visually, looking at the pictures, it looks like the front diameter is a bit too much?

Just another option.

Thanks Jonny, you have an excellent point, here's an interesting note. The Tirerack rep pointed out that the Bridgestone RE-11 205s are only available with the XL designation, which is a stiffer sidewall. I think that is why they are so wide and the lip is so pronounced. Every manufacturer is different so the crap shoot ensues...

Looking at the tire wall and fender, I only need to roll it a little and all will be well in the front so getting 215/45s isn't happening. Especially since I have the 255s coming for the rear. Wanna buy some cheap 245s?

The 255/40s in the rear should give me about a 1/4 inch more diameter in the rear, matching the front. It will be a week or two before that happens. Cheers

Well, I rolled the fenders and didn't screw anything up. It was nerve racking but I took my time and worked at it. The baseball bat and air gun are the ticket, especially the handle nub at the end of the bat, that really brought the lip in. I'll have to paint the inside of the lip with weatherizer because the paint comes off the lip while rolling the bat. I reduced the lip from 1/2" to 1/4". Haven't been able to test drive but I think it should do the trick. Still waiting on the 255s.

I'm running ~2* front camber, non-rolled lip, no contact on a "spirited" test drive.

looks great :p

Nice ride 97, have you taken any temp readings on your tires? I'd like to go to -2* also but thought I might be wearing out my inner tread.

Honestly, all I've done us gone around the block and one quick tear through an empty parking lot. 2° is a total guess.

Has anyone used these wheels in a widebody? if so, what kind of spacers should be used?
