1973.5T "green ignition wire" trouble
That green wire that connects from the distributor to the three pin CDI unit on my 1973.5T is over 40 years old now. I believe it left me stranded a few times, which included yesterday. The car suddenly died at a traffic light. After waiting for the engine to cool off I removed the dist. cap, jiggled the wire and she started right up!
So now I am challenged with replacing it. Looks simple enough, but I have no idea where to purchase this specialty item. I do see that for the SC cars the wire is available but its shorter then what I would need. Anyone know where to find these? Replacement suggestions since its shielded and only conducts a certain voltage/ohm. I hope someone in the community can provide some answers since I have seen little in the "green wire" category for the 1973.5T (the first CIS). Thanks Bob 1973.5T |

If I recall correctly the 1973.5 did not come with a breakerless ignition set up. My 73.5 had points and a condensor type ignition, hence no green wire. The green wire (coax) is used in the breaker less distributor of later years. But to answer your question the longer green wire used, is a 928 part number Pelican Parts - Product Information: 928-602-907-00-M100

I do not have the condenser set up on my distributor. I believe the previous owner might have updated to the Bosch distributor. I do however, have a green wire with a copper fitting that does attach to the side of the distributor and trends to the CDI three pin fitting. I will assume this picks up the signal from the points and sends it to the CDI unit.
I can further expose it after I remove the tape that secures several other wires in the harness and perhaps this is the way to go, but I need to know more aobut the wire regarding guage, resistance, capacity, etc and all that other stuff so I can replace it. thanks Bob |

just a green wire with a braid over it. not a coaxial wire.

John are you saying its just a standard coated copper wire. I am not sure of the guage. Why the braided cover?

my green wires were cut and the P.O. used wire nuts to put it back together, didn't find that for a few months, car ran great, it's just a wire, lamp wire would work. of course porsche over engineered this to survive a EMP attack.

You could convert to the $75 Pelican short green wire style if you cut the wire and install a 2-Pole Female AMP Junior Timer Connector Kit from here:
AMP Connectors/Terminals Or, Use a 16 gauge belden shielded cable, carefully take apart the 40 yr old plastic slide connector and replace the entire wire after undoing your engine harness from the CDI connector to the dizzy. Here's a picture of one using the Belden I made for someone. Not Green, but it works. ![]()

Hey Mark,
We saw you and waved back. Talk about crazy moments!! We were left stranded over in Marietta near the Avenue, which is happening with too much frequency these days. I will have to deal with changing out the fuel tank and getting that infamous green wire corrected. When old Misses Brown works well, she's a kick to drive, but I am thinking hard about how much longer I want to keep her. See you around. Bob |
