If its not one thing, its another..... jeez.
My car now looks great (top and bottom), sounds great (thanks Bob!) idles and brakes perfectly (no more vacuume leaks) and I fit in it (modified seats). I pulled all of the mickey mouse stereo BS out (new "old" blaupunkt) and traced and fixed a few minor electrical gremlins. Hooray!
Beautiful day here in Colorado - warm in town, but the mountains in the not far off distance are still fully marbled with snow. DRIVE TIME! I now have a semi dead spot at 12 o'clock on the steering wheel. It is not really dead - it is actually the only place where the steering feels normal. Move the wheel 4-6" either side of this spot and it is pretty stiff, and the wheel does not return to center. It is like a video game - but not in a good way. Any ideas on where I should start? It is a 1977 911S Everything (ball joints, tie rods) is fairly new (less than 2500 miles). Tires are wearing even. After doing a search, I degreased, cleaned and regreased the steering u-joints in the smugglers box. No change (just a messy smugglers box...). Thanks *again* for any direction. Sorry for all of the questions regarding this car. I am really out of my element on this thing/trying to get knowledgeable.

Would it make sense to try loosening and retightening a few joints while car is under full weight(not jacked up)? Ie, steering u-joints, anti-roll bars etc. Seems the wheel should return to center after a turn without a lot of drama unless binding/wrong caster is to blame.

Directly in the wheel you're looking at possibly a bad steering rod u-joint. They are very easy to inspect. Everything else is a direct connection from the rack to the tie-rods.

Have you replaced the bushing at the top of the steering shaft recently? Mine felt like that till I took the new bushing out and relieved it a bit to free it up.

Sounds like your u joints aren't phased properly.

I just thought of something that may be an issue/an included detail. I had the front of this car on jack stands for about a week doing some detailing. The issue was not even remotely there prior - car drove great.
When I put it back down on the ground I noticed a clunk in the front end going over bumps. The only thing I touched was one of the sway bar arms (it had partially slid off of the bar). I loosened it up and pushed it back on with no problems. After I was done and had the clunk, the only thing I could get to make any noise at all was the sway bar moving side to side through the body. I ordered new bushings, but have yet to install them. Here is the weird part - the clunking has become less since my initial drive after pulling the car off of the jack stands. It is still there, but maybe half as much. Do these additional details shed any new light? Thanks again - cant thank you all enough for the help. -Scott S
