Where do get bulk fasteners?
Hi,
Instead of constantly running to the hardware store every time I need a nut or bolt, is there a place online to get a whole array of regular and/or stainless fasteners?

The Pelican site sells hardware sets. Just search under 'hardware', they have nuts, bolts, washers ect.

So then the next question is which fasteners to get... 10 and 13 mm nuts, but how which bolts and what length? I guess you could check out the parts book to get an idea.

McMaster-Carr is great if you don't need your fasteners in yellow zinc. If you want the yellow/gold stuff, then Belmetric is the place to go. I usually keep a decent supply of m6 and m8 nuts+washers as these will cover the majority of your needs on an older Porsche.
The bolts are a little trickier to order as the factory tended to spec out lengths exactly as needed and not just in more generic "close enough" sizes.

Telephone the host and ask, they might have some frequently used kits.
I have this (which I don't believe the host sells) http://www.a u t o m o t i o n.com/wurth-metric-hardware-kit-general-bolt-nut-assortment-490pieces-for-porsche.html

I've had the same problem getting yellow zinc passivated (YZP) nuts & bolts. I managed to find a UK supplier, but unfortunately they only sell large quantities (200/500/1000). This is fine for nuts & washers where only a few sizes are required. However bolts are a different matter with such a huge array of sizes. That being said I did buy 500 M6 x 12 and 500 M6 x 16which Eagle Day describe as Porsches favourite fasteners.
www.shopfasteners.co.uk The other option I am l looking at is to buy bright zinc passivated (BZP) bolts which are readily available in small quantities and dip them in Yellow Zinc Passivating solution (Zinc Chromate?). This is easily obtained and only requires clean BZP items to be dipped - no electrodes or electroplating involved. The variables are concentration, temperature, and time -according to my research. I haven't tried it yet - are there any Pelicanites who have tried this? Final option is simply bit the bullet and buy from Porsche dealer - not that expensive for small quantities. |

any auto parts store will sell a hardware assortment that has most of the common sizes. the one I get is available for SAE, DIN metric (euro cars) or JIS metric (asian cars). grilot's garage also sell such assortments as does pegasus racing. i bought the pep boys one and an empty grilot's metal storage case to keep them in.
