Removing Heat Exchangers
I am not sure if it's the deadline of the last issue of 9 Magazine, or all the Porsche shows we have been too... but I'm having one heck of a time removing the heat exchangers on our Project 74 Carrera.
I was able to remove the three nuts which a long extention thru the heat exchangers will remove. However where I 'm having the problem is with the other three nuts. I can't seem to find a way to access them. Any suggestions? Brian Minson 9 Magazine bminson@9magazine.net http://www.9magazine.net PS the cover of the new issue features the 2002 911 Targa, and features 8 great articles. |

On all the ones I've removed, I've had the benefit of the engine being out of the car, or the car has been on a lift. Hopefully you're not under a car doing this; sounds nightmarish.
Which other three nuts are you speaking of? On the other heat exchanger? Or that bolt to the heads? If you are speaking of the bolts on the heads, there are six per exchanger, and they are the worst. I've done it each time with regular wrenches, but there are curvy wrenches available that are supposed to be great for reaching them.

I used an old box end wrench that I bent in my vise to have more angle than normal, worked like a charm. I suppose an offset type wrench would work to but I didn't have one at the time.

One tool that will help is a 13mm universal socket, not a 13mm socket on a seperate universal, that will not help. Another possibility is find some one near you that has the wrench that SSI ships with their heat exchangers. You will be able to reach all of the nuts with that wrench. Good luck.

Marc,
Like this? The larger one, I think, comes with SSIs. The smaller one, obviously, was made from a box wrench and a 3/8" extension. I used these on my old 2.2 E (which I haven't had for years). Chris. |

If someone has one of these extra tools they don't need anymore it's worth a subscription to 9 magazine and some other goodies!
Any takers? Brian Minson 9 Magazine http://www.9magazine.net bminson@9magazine.net |

search the archives for "SSI CLINIC". heat is necessary. oxy/acet heat, not that wimpy mapp gas. use a 13mm 3/8 drive wobbly socket and a long extension. no heat=broken studs.

Go to Sears, buy a 13 mm Crafsman box end wrench used for "adjusting brakes and distributor." I bought mine there for ... $10 when I needed it for the exact three nuts you are talking about.

Re-read JW's post. You'll turn your project into nightmare if you don't use heat. ( Unless they've been off recently, and they used copper-based anti-seize )

For the thin flange heat exchangers (pre-80ish?) cars the 13mm SSI wrench won't work or at least it didn't for me. For one thing, the nuts are 12mm. The head is very close to the nut (as you can see from Wayne's picture) so a box wrench is usually too thick.

There is also a SSI wrench available for 12 mm nuts. Cheers, Jim
