Another cv boot question

After reading past posts for about a half hour on cv boot replacement I think I have it figured out.

On an 87 to replace the outer boot, do I need to remove the inner cv joint and slide the outer boot along the shaft to replace?

How does the inner cv come apart?

Just saw my mechanic changed mine last Friday...

He removed the entire axle (6 allen bolts on each end of the joint) then place the whole thing on a vice.

Then its a simple matter of prying open the CV joint cover & replace the boot. After seeing what happened to mine, I suggest to do this if you are not lazy - mine started as a faulty boot, but end up discovering that the inner joint is wearing out. And we decide to clean the outter one anyway since the whole thing is apart - cheap insurance.

Yes - you have it correct. Since you can't disassemble the outer joint, you must take off the inner joint and its boot and slide the outer boot on from the gearbox end of the shaft.

The inner joint is held on to the axle with a circlip or snap ring and also may be a tight fit (mine needed to be pressed on and off).

It's not a lot of fun cleaning all the old grease out of that permanently assembled joint but you really should if the boot has torn.
